You're storing your eggs in wrong place- here's where they should be kept
When arranging groceries in the fridge, it’s tempting to tuck eggs neatly into the designated compartments on the refrigerator door. After all, it’s a space-saving feature many fridges offer, and it seems like the logical spot for your morning omelette staples.
But according to storage expert Adam Oakley from Door to Store, this common habit is far from ideal. In fact, storing eggs in the fridge door could be cutting their shelf life short and even increasing the risk of contamination.
“The fridge door experiences constant temperature fluctuations due to regular opening and closing.

“This unstable environment creates conditions where bacteria can thrive and can weaken the egg’s natural protective barrier, speeding up spoilage,” the expert said.

And it’s not just the temperature swings that are the problem. The frequent movement of the door can cause eggs to shake slightly, which might not sound like a big deal but can reduce their quality over time.
Instead of the door, the expert advises placing eggs in the deeper, middle sections of your fridge. These areas maintain a consistent temperature, typically below 20°C, which is crucial for preserving freshness.
If you’re worried about eggs absorbing unwanted smells or flavours from other foods, consider using a dedicated tray or container with a lid. This extra step not only helps maintain quality but also keeps your fridge more organised.
For those tempted to skip the fridge altogether, the expert emphasises that refrigeration is the way to go. He said: “Eggs stored at room temperature start losing quality within a few days, especially in warmer climates. While eggs kept outside the fridge should ideally be used within 1–3 weeks, refrigerated eggs can last up to 3–5 weeks with their freshness intact.”
However, even refrigerated eggs aren’t immune to time. “While refrigeration significantly extends shelf life, it’s always best to consume eggs within a few weeks to ensure optimal taste and quality,” Oakley adds.
To keep your eggs fresher for longer, always store them in their original carton, as the porous eggshells can absorb odours from the fridge, and the carton provides a protective barrier. And avoid washing the eggs before storing them, as this removes their natural coating and makes them more susceptible to bacteria.
Place the eggs with the pointed end down to help maintain the yolk’s central position and preserve freshness. Additionally, keep eggs away from strong-smelling foods, as even in a container, they can pick up unwanted odours over time.
