The brains behind Luther and Spooks has created what will arguably be your next TV obsession - four-part murder mystery The Sister. Starring Being Human's Russell Tovey, the spooky series (yes, there are ghosts) is coming to ITV this autumn. Written by Neil Cross, the series is inspired by his 2009 novel Burial, which features the tagline: 'How far would you go to keep a secret?' Pretty far, by the sound of the synopsis:

Nathan (Russell Tovey) has never been able to forget the worst night of his life: the party that led to the sudden, shocking death of a young woman. Only he and Bob, an untrustworthy old acquaintance, know what really happened and they have resolved to keep it that way. But one rainy night, years later, Bob appears at Nathan's door with terrifying news, and old wounds are suddenly reopened, threatening to tear Nathan's whole world apart. Because Nathan has his own secrets now. And Bob doesn't realise just how far Nathan will go to protect them...

The ITV synopsis adds that Bob's appearance triggers "a series of catastrophic decisions which drive a tense and compelling narrative of psychological suspense, dread, love and possible redemption." So, yeah, Bob really causes some major drama.

Speaking about the project when it was commissioned, Cross said: "It’s one of my favourite stories. A tale of psychological suspense, of guilt and ghosts and murder. Oh, and love. Always love. Our job is to make viewers want to sleep with the lights on. We’re looking forward to it."

Who stars in The Sister?

As well as Russell, the series stars Doctor Foster's Bertie Carvel as Bob, Game of Thrones actor Amrita Acharia as Holly, Doctors actor Paul Bazely as Graham, Holby City's Nina Toussaint White as Jackie, Sex Education's Simone Ashley as Elise and Casualty actor Amanda Root as June.

Talking about his role, Russell shared, "The Sister is going to challenge me as an actor more than I’ve ever been challenged before. As a web of lies, that he thought was dead and buried, comes back to haunt Nathan, he sinks deeper and deeper into the horror of the event that happened ten years ago."

When will The Sister be on ITV?

While we don't have a confirmed release date yet, the mini-series will land sometime this autumn.

Is there a trailer for The Sister?

ITV have now released the first official teaser, which opens with Holly (Amrita Acharia) telling Nathan she loves him before it cuts to Bob banging at the door. Bob reveals the woods are being dug up, and everything starts to spectacularly unravel...
