'Yellowstone' Fans Are In Total Disbelief After the Season 5, Part 2 Premiere
It finally happened. Yellowstone killed one of TV's most iconic characters: John Dutton. After Kevin Costner's departure from the series following his reported feud with series creator Taylor Sheridan, the Dutton family patriarch is no more. In the season 5, part 2 premiere, John is found dead in the governor’s mansion. He was shot right before his impeachment trial (a bit convenient, isn’t it?). At first, John’s death appears to be a tragic suicide, but his family knows better. They suspect foul play. As the episode unfolds, we learn their suspicions were correct—an enemy is among them, and now, the Dutton family has been permanently ruptured.
Naturally, fans of the show are clamouring for answers. What happens now?! Who is responsible for John’s demise? How will the Dutton family survive—and, perhaps more importantly, what does this mean for the family business? Thankfully, the episode answers one question for us. John’s adopted son, Jamie, is partially responsible for his death. He and his father were at odds, so Jamie’s girlfriend, Sarah Atwood, hired a hitman. It wasn’t what Jamie wanted, but now, the deed is done, and everyone’s left to fend for themselves. John’s daughter, Beth, wants Jamie’s head. Let the games begin.
In the wake of John’s death, fans have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss. The general consensus? WTF is going on?! What happens next is anyone’s guess. Below, we’ve rounded up the best reactions to the season 5, part 2 premiere.
John Dutton was a fantastic character, and despite the Kevin Costner drama, he deserved a better goodbye than Yellowstone gave him. #YellowstoneTV

Billy Ray Klapper--featured in tonight's season premiere of Yellowstone--passed away at age 87 just two months ago. Legend... pic.twitter.com/jGGwmyzzBb

One things many fans may have missed on tonight’s episode of @Yellowstone was the appearance of legendary spur maker Mr. Billy Klapper, who gifted a pair of spurs to Rip. (1/2)

Waited 2 years for a new episode just to watch 3 minutes and change the channel. Fu** you Taylor Sheridan, and fu** you @kevincostnerprv, for not settling your differences. 😡🤦♂️ #Yellowstone #YellowstoneTV pic.twitter.com/UYoCwBsKCP

Imagine the audacity of Taylor Sheridan treating Kevin Costner like that. Kevin was winning Oscar’s before Taylor could legally drink in most states. He’s the ONLY reason I started watching-I stayed for most of the cast. Bad,arrogant call! Take him to the 🚂 station! #Yellowstone pic.twitter.com/yX21Mr3aoL

John Dutton deserved to go out like a gladiator, not a victim. Completely undoes the series. I’m not a fan at all how #Yellowstone handled Costner’s departure. pic.twitter.com/mECsM6gluf

If THAT'S how they decide to end a great character like John Dutton...
THAT'S BULLSHIT. #YellowstoneTV #Yellowstone pic.twitter.com/fhAYa81rwS— NOTDaleJR88 (@NOTDaleJR88) November 11, 2024
Plenty of folks are saying they won’t watch Yellowstone anymore with how they had John Dutton go out. As a character purist, I get it. But Kelly Reilly’s performance deserves fans seeing the season through. pic.twitter.com/v33RKBWIpZ

I can’t believe we waited 679 days in between #Yellowstone episodes because Kevin Costner was tired of playing a cowboy on TV and wanted to be a cowboy in a movie for him to not even be in the damn episode.

Wow, talk about lazy and petty writing on @Yellowstone. Taylor Sheridan is a twat and needs to be brought to the train station pronto! pic.twitter.com/39CzvY89WQ

Even thought we know KEVIN COSTNER wasn’t supposed to come back for the rest of #Yellowstone. The way to end his character was just dumbfounded and lazy. Could’ve been a better way or he just could’ve rode off into the sunset. #YellowstoneTV pic.twitter.com/5JhPPCoscl

I know I’m not the only one to say this or think this. But why hasn’t RIP gotten his own show yet.
