Woman's Dry January Invite to Friends and Family Goes Viral After They Reject Her One by One (Exclusive)
Harley Hurosky's attempt to rally her loved ones for a month of sobriety turned into a viral TikTok hit
Harley Hurosky’s attempt to recruit friends and family for a month of sobriety took a humorous turn when it went viral on TikTok. As she recorded the reactions of her loved ones, they comically declined, one by one.
“I knew that my friends would be appalled that I would have the nerve to ask,” Hurosky exclusively tells PEOPLE. “I included my parents because I thought they would be one of the first to answer the phone — but had no idea that both of their answers would be the funniest of them all.”
For Hurosky, the decision to commit to Dry January stemmed from some post-holiday fatigue.
“Honestly, doing a lot of drinking during the holiday season had me feeling gross,” she admits. “I wanted to see if eliminating alcohol would help me improve my brain fog, energy levels, and my overall health.” She also cited her susceptibility to hangovers as a significant motivator.

This isn’t Hurosky’s first attempt at a sober month. She and her boyfriend participated in Dry January last year, though the results were not as dramatic as they had hoped. “I honestly think we ended up eating all the calories we saved from not drinking,” she jokes. “But, I demonstrated to myself that I could quit drinking for a month if I chose to.”

Despite the humorous discouragement from her friends and family, Hurosky remains committed to her goal with a slight modification. “I know that I could do it by myself if I chose to, but I’ll be doing a slightly damp January regardless,” she says.
But, for those considering their own Dry January journey, Hurosky advises, “Surround yourself with people who don’t go out every weekend. Maybe pick up a hobby other than going to the bar, like reading or bird watching to help avoid distractions.”

Since going viral, Hurosky’s TikTok has struck a chord with viewers. “Lots of support on joining me for Dry January," she shares. "TikTok commenters are mentioning how hilarious my friends and family’s responses were.”
The video's unexpected success has inspired Hurosky to set new goals for the coming year, too. "Watching my video go viral and seeing the positive responses has inspired me to continue to create and share funny and relatable content," she shares. "I love making people laugh."
As Hurosky navigates her “slightly damp January,” even faced with the comical resistance from loved ones, she hopes others will challenge themselves to think outside the box because, as she adds, “nothing negative can come from Dry January.”
