Considering it's a popular sitcom that first aired 17 years ago, you'd have thought that the chances of finding someone who hasn't seen Gavin & Stacey are pretty slim. But, surprisingly there are people out there who haven't tuned into the BBC show which got 17 million viewers.

One woman has had her say on the hit TV sitcom after only just starting to watch the show and revealed there was one character that she hated. True fans, look away now or you'll be fumin'. An account on Mumsnet, named BurntBroccoli, said that she loved the show but said that she disliked the character of Smithy, played by James Corden.

BurntBroccoli posted on Mumsnet and said: "I'm not sure why I never watched this back in 2007, but have finally started watching this evening! Up to the one where they just got married. Smithy is a horrible character but I love, love, love Nessa!"

In response, other views shared their love for the show, with one named RunVelma saying: "Love, love, love Gavin & Stacey. It’s my go-to. Sat up watching it all night when I was in early labour, and again when I lost my Dad and couldn’t sleep. My baby is now a teenager and when she’s upset we watch a few episodes together. So looking forward to sitting down to the finale on Christmas Day!"

Another disagreed and said they loved Smithy and said: "Smithy is not horrible!! How could you form that opinion!! We rewatch it a few times a year. Love it". While another remarked: "I don't remember Smithy being that horrible (especially compared to Pete and Dawn!) but I didn't love one of his dating storylines. Pam is my favourite character, I find Gavin's parents very comforting for some reason!"

For many, who are avid fans of the show, Smithy is a loveable and funny character, played spectacularly by James Corden, who co-created the series with Ruth Jones. He is known for calling his beloved best friend 'Gavlar' (Gavin), crumbling during his best man's speech at Gavin and Stacey's wedding and then interrupting Nessa and Dave Coaches' wedding at the end of series three. When asked recently what the show meant to him, James Corden said: "Gavin & Stacey is just a huge part of my life, it changed my life in every way. The thing it means to me most, is my friendship with Ruth. To have an idea with a friend in a hotel in Leeds 20 years ago and then be sat here today with what it’s become… if you think about it too much you could really just start crying all the time. I love her so much and I’m so proud of what we’ve done."

This Christmas, the series will see the main cast reprising their roles to say their goodbye to the show's fans in the last ever episode. Gavin & Stacey: The Finale will be aired on Christmas Day (Wednesday, December 25). For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.
