Woman Upsets Her Sister for Alluding That Her Child Isn’t a 'Real' Baby Because She Was Born Through IVF
The argument began when the woman's sister insulted her engagement ring because it was made in a lab
A woman has made her sister upset by alluding that her child is not a "real" baby because she was conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
The 26-year-old woman revealed in a recent post on Reddit's "Am I the A------?" forum that the argument began when her sister insulted her engagement ring because it was made in a lab.
"I was very excited to share with my family of course," she wrote of her New Year’s Day engagement, adding that "everyone congratulated me and my fiancé."
The woman went on to explain that she sent a picture of her engagement ring to her family group chat and posted it on Instagram, where she has been receiving attention for her "very big diamond."
The woman explained that she has been straightforward about her bling featuring a five-cut lab-grown diamond, given that she "specifically asked for a lab diamond as I believe they're more ethical, as you never know if a mined diamond is a blood diamond."
And while her sister, 31, was excited for her at first, the woman said her sibling later grew moody after she revealed her ring. The Redditor claimed that her sister told her the ring was "too flashy" and not practical.
Later during a conversation, the sister said the woman's fiancé could not afford the ring and suggested she should get it tested.
After the soon-to-be bride explained that it was a lab diamond, therefore less expensive, her sister allegedly proceeded to say that "lab diamonds aren't real diamonds and since they're made in a lab it doesn't hold the same sentimental value."

The woman, who noted that her sister’s own ring is a "beautiful" one-cut mined diamond, tried to laugh off the insult and reaffirm that she didn’t want a mined diamond.
"When I said that, she started yelling at me that it wasn't even a real diamond in the first place and that it was grown in a lab not the ground," she further detailed.
At that point, the Redditor decided to turn her sister’s argument against her. "That's when said by her logic, my niece wasn't a real baby then because she was an IVF baby and grown in a lab too," she wrote. "My sister and her husband had a lot of issues conceiving as my sister had some complications with endometriosis."
Per the Mayo Clinic, IVF involves a "complex series of procedures that can lead to a pregnancy" and is a tool for infertility, as well as to avoid "passing on genetic problems to a child."
During the process, "mature eggs are collected from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab."
The woman admitted that her sister’s IVF journey was "really tough" and she experienced one miscarriage before welcoming a "very healthy" baby in 2023.
"I know my sister had a hard time conceiving, that was kind of the point I was making," she wrote. "My niece started in a lab but she has [a] beautiful meaning behind her life too."

The woman's comment, however, hurt her sister’s feelings and caused her to start crying. Since then, the woman wrote that her sister’s husband called her and said she was "insensitive and couldn't understand the depths of her emotional turmoil."
According to the Redditor, the husband even called her "ableist," despite her own struggles with endometriosis.
"My mom says it's not a big deal but I should let my sister cool off," she continued. "I usually babysit my niece pretty often but my sister hasn't been answering my calls for a week."
Before asking if she was in the wrong, the woman added that her fiancé said she was "justified," even though she probably should not have made the comment.
The woman added that she knows her niece is "a real baby," adding: "I adore her and spoil her all the time."
In the comments section, other users were divided over the difficult situation and noted that the woman and her sister both were at fault.
One commenter said that the woman simply used her sister’s logic in another scenario to prove a point. "You didn't bring it up out of nothing and it also doesn't represent your actual thoughts, it's just a far extension of your sister's argument," they wrote. "Your sister started a stupid fight, I think because she is jealous of your ring and felt the need to put you down. You hit her where it hurts, not going to lie, but she set herself up for it."
Another said the poster was not in the wrong at all. "You didn't really tell your sister that her baby is not a real baby, you used the comparison as a way to show her how idiotic her arguments were. And you are right," they commented.
"You both need to grow up a bit," wrote a third person. "You have made your point to your sister but have you considered how your comparison and words will make your niece feel when she grows up and someone will mention your petty argument? When your sister started crossing [a] line you should have just [hung] up."
