The Whopper is one of the most famous burgers out there – so when Burger King announced it was changing the recipe, I was seriously intrigued.

Die-hard fast food fans may worry about any tweaks being made to the beloved menu item, which has been a staple since 1957. So when I went down to try the new and improved recipe, I was a little apprehensive.

I was invited behind the scenes to see how the re-vamped Whopper would look – and also spoke to Christian Binney, Burger King's Director of Food Development, who took me through what the changes actually are.

Christian explained: "We've made some really great changes to what was already a brilliant burger. The Whopper has been around since 1957, it's our iconic burger. It celebrates everything that's flame-grilled and we've listened to our Whopper-lovers and burger-lovers over the years and we're always looking to see if we can improve it.

"It's a hard task because it's a great burger to start with. We've identified a number of key areas where we can dial up and make sure we're delivering awesome guest experiences every time."

The first big change is to do with the burger's temperature, which is being raised from 55 to 60 degrees. According to Christian, this provides the "optimal experience" as it stays hotter for longer.

Next, Burger King has adjusted how the patty is formed. Instead of packing the meat together, it'll have more of a "loose, juicier texture". Apparently, this makes the flame-grilled flavour even more noticeable.

And finally, the bun has been tweaked. As well as toasting it for longer to provide a hotter temperature, they've made the bread "softer and fluffier" .

So will I actually notice these three key tweaks when I bite into the Whopper? Check out my thoughts below...

My verdict of the improved Whopper

With these three changes, Burger King is hoping to create an "even juicier and fluffier" burger. From looking at the burger, I would say the change it noticeable. I love a Whopper, and there's no doubt the revamp has made it look extra appealing. The bun, which has a different glaze, looks darker and more shiny, and is super soft.

It's only the inside that's toasted, which means the bun stays soft, but the inside doesn't become soggy from the ingredients.

I could definitely taste that the burger was juicier, and it's still got that distinctive flame-grilled taste - which has been even more ramped up, in my opinion. From looking at the patty, it does seem to have a looser, less compact texture.

That being said, Whopper fans don't need to worry that their favourite burger has completely changed. The tweaks are noticeable, but it's not a different burger.

Speaking of the changes, Christian added: "With the bun, the beef and the temperature of the product, I think we've lifted the Whopper even higher than it already was before. It's never tasted as good. I'm really proud of the work we've done so far. We're really proud to have no artificial colours, preservatives or additives in any of our food. All the changes we've made are using natural ingredients across the board. It makes it more challenging but it's also more true, authentic food. We don't have any secrets in our food. It's real, authentic flavour."
