Couple breaks up after Christmas

A woman says that after her boyfriend let her down this Christmas, she decided that they shouldn't be together anymore.

In a post on Reddit’s "Am I Overreacting" page, the 20-year-old woman said she recently broke up with her 21-year-old boyfriend of over two years — and the law straw revolved around the fact that he didn't get her anything for Christmas.

The woman said that in the past, her boyfriend has given her "a few nice, thoughtful gifts and handwritten cards,” and she was expecting more of the same this past holiday — especially since he "asked me what I wanted."

“I sent him a few things I wanted as options (around $20 each)," the woman said, sharing that all in all she spent "around $90 on his presents and put effort into making him something."

The things got awkward when Christmas Eve arrived.

"I was excited to give him his gifts and I asked him where mine was jokingly. He told me it was coming in the mail which I believed," the woman wrote — but after a week had passed and nothing had materialized, she got him to admit the truth.

"I felt like something was off so I asked him if something is really coming in the mail and he said, 'No I’m sorry I didn’t get you anything,' " she wrote.

As an explanation, she said he claimed he "didn't know what to get to me," but the woman said that made "no sense since I literally sent him exact photos of things I wanted and he knows me well enough to pick something out anyways."

Ultimately, the Redditor said that what happened made her question whether they were still on the same page.

“I don’t care about getting anything expensive or nice but I would have loved and appreciated even just a card," she wrote. "This made me feel like he put no effort or care towards me when I put in a lot of effort to pick out things he’d like and make him something."

Ultimately, the woman said that she decided to end things.

“I broke up with him because it made me feel that he doesn’t care about me as much as he used to,” the woman said, before asking her fellow Redditors what they thought — and the majority of commenters took her side.

“You didn’t break up with him over not getting a Christmas gift. You broke up with him because he treated you like someone he couldn’t be bothered to put five minutes of thought into,” one user wrote.

Another commenter pointed out that in addition to not getting her anything, her boyfriend also lied about what happened in the first place. "That's even worse because he was perfectly fine with letting you think that there was a gift on its way and then just... probably either never bringing it up again, or pretending it got lost," they wrote.

"Sounds like he’s checked out, and honestly, if he can’t even put in a little thought for you, that’s a red flag," added another. "You deserve better, no doubt."
