Woman Says Friends Called Her a 'Karen’ for Correcting Drink Order: 'They Said I Embarrassed Them'
The woman says her friends told her to just be "grateful" the bar made her a non-alcoholic drink in the first place
A woman says her friends claimed she was being a “Karen” when she requested a new drink after not getting what she ordered.
In a post on Reddit's “Am I the A------?,” the woman, 22, wrote that she went to dinner with two friends. “I don't drink for personal reasons, but I love the taste of piña coladas,” she wrote.
Although the restaurant didn't have that on the menu, there was a "piña Koala."
"It was described as a cocktail version of a piña colada with a koala on it," the woman wrote. "When the server came, I asked if they could possibly make a virgin piña koala, and she said she'd ask the bar."
However, when the drink arrived, the woman wrote that it was "not a Piña Koala," but was instead "a tall pink drink."
After taking a beat to realize she got the wrong drink, the woman told her friends what had happened.
"One of my friends responded with, 'It's okay, at least you got a drink.," the woman wrote, sharing that another friend "shook their head" and said that she should just be grateful" because the restaurant went through the "trouble" of making her a non-alcoholic option.
"They even suggested I just try the drink and only correct them if the drink was "awful,' " she continued.

Ultimately, although the woman said that the drink "was good in its own right," she still wanted the drink she ordered.
When the server came back, the woman wrote that she ultimately requested the correct beverage — despite her friends' insistence that she shouldn't bother — and that the staff was "very kind and apologetic."
However, she said that for the rest of the night her friends "were so annoyed and irritated with me"
"They insisted I was being a 'Karen' and should have just stayed quiet. They said I embarrassed them with my entitlement," she wrote. "The end of the night was awkward and I've been thinking about this incident for a few days now. I normally struggle to correct my orders so being able to do so was a big step for me, but I still wonder if my friends were right and I should have been grateful to receive anything."
Commenters were quick to come to the woman’s defense, with many noting that simply expecting what you ordered is not entitlement.
“Good for you for having the confidence to ask for it to be corrected,” another wrote. “There is no issue in having it remade as long as you're polite about it, which it sounds like you are.”
Another pointed out that making a piña colada without alcohol is no more “trouble” than making an alcoholic one. “Making a virgin drink is no more complex than making one with alcohol in it - it’s all about liquids and proportions," read the reply.
Other replies suggested that it may be time for the woman to seek out new friends.
“It’s my opinion that if they’re willing to ruin your evening over this, it’s time for a new friend group," read one commenter, while another simply wrote, “Asking politely for what you actually ordered isn't being a Karen. Your friends are wrong.”
