Woman Backs Out of Family Vacation After Being Forced to Pay Full Price to Share a Room with Parents

A woman is seeking support from the Reddit community after facing a decision on whether or not to attend her family vacation after being asked to pay full price for a room — despite having to share it with her parents.

“I am the only single, childless person in my family,” she begins her post. “My siblings are in relationships and have kids.” When the family began planning for their yearly cabin trip, discussions about sleeping arrangements naturally arose.

She reveals that she would have to share a room with her parents, which she doesn’t entirely mind, but notes, “I would appreciate having my own space.” Unfortunately, the chosen vacation destination doesn’t allow for it to be arranged that way.

So the cost of the cabin and pet fees are now being divided among couples, but as a single individual, she’s expected to pay the same amount as everyone else.

“Considering, it’s just me and I won’t have my own space for my only vacation of the year, I don’t think I should have to pay the same amount as everyone else,” she points out. Instead, she feels she could use that money to enjoy a peaceful solo vacation.

Frustrated with how to proceed, the poster decided to air her concerns to her loved ones. While most of her family remained silent on the matter, a few members dismissed her feelings with comments like, “That’s not how it works in the real world," she writes.

Apart from the financial aspect of the trip, the woman notes that she works with children every day and doesn’t receive paid time off, making vacations a rare opportunity for her. She also mentions she tends to become overstimulated during family gatherings.

Additionally, the woman is worried she may have to play babysitter on this trip should she attend. At past gatherings, she's been told, “We do it everyday; it’s your turn,” when asked to help with childcare, she says.

“They seem to think I don’t deserve to relax because I’ve decided not to have children,” she explains. While she loves spending time with her nieces and nephews, she fears taking this vacation means sacrificing her own rest and enjoyment.

She even opted out of last year’s family trip for similar reasons, but is now questioning if her decision to back out makes her selfish or inconsiderate. Many Reddit users are validating her feelings and supporting her right to a proper vacation, however.

In an update, the poster revealed she has remained firm in her decision to skip, as her only option for privacy and lower costs would be to camp.

“I’m sure I’ll get to go again sometime in the future but the older I get, I’m more interested in protecting my peace and choosing myself,” she notes.
