When you combine an up-and-coming model with an up-and-coming designer, you get runway magic.
That’s what happened when Canadian beauty Winnie Harlow walked the runway as part of Matty Bovan’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection on Saturday.
Bovan’s collection, part of the Fashion East showcase, is his third London Fashion Week collection, and it’s easy why he’s being touted as one of the most promising emerging designers.
The runway show featured bright colours, raw-edged knits and motocross-inspired looks — from translucent kneepads, shin pads and “the crass branding of motor racing.”
Supermodel Hailey Baldwin also walked the red carpet for Bovan.
The Fashion East show also featured two other up-and-coming designers, Supriya Lele and ASAI.
ASAI designer A Sai Tai’s collection featured “archetypal items of clothing seen through the lens of a First Generation Londoner” — think trench coats and bomber jackets — and what it looks like when “they collide with stereotyical ideas of Chinese heritage.”
Vibrant hue, tube tops and expertly-shredded jackets were combined with stunning silk accents while delicate skirts were featured under oversized bombers.
For Supriya Lele’s show, combining cultures was another major theme.
“I always rebelled against the idea of being the ‘good’ Indian kid who trains to be a doctor,” said the Asian British designer. “I was drawn to art, architecture and fashion.”
Her second collection on the Fashion East platform featured 12 looks featuring stunning draping and handiwork techniques inspired by her Indian heritage. She combined latex-esque skirts with hand-printed organza and sari-style skirts and dresses.
