Whilst the start of the year is reserved for the major movie awards, summertime is when we often get together to celebrate and honour the big names of food and drink. Last night (11 May) it was Fortnum & Mason’s turn to champion the achievements of the UK’s current and emerging writers, publishers, photographers, broadcasters and personalities who encourage us to enjoy and discover more about food and drink through their work.

Hosted by Andi Oliver and Angela Hartnett OBE at The Royal Exchange, everyone from Yotam Ottolenghi and Dame Mary Berry, to The Hairy Bikers duo Si and Dave, and Rick Stein were in attendance.

Writer Felicity Cloake took home the gong for Food Book of the Year for her read Red Sauce, Brown Sauce, following her adventures by bicycle in a quest to uncover the great, British breakfast. Whilst the adorable father-daughter-duo Al and Kitty Tait were awarded Debut Book of the Year for Breadsongwhich tells the liberating story of Kitty’s path from depressive withdrawal to finding the healing power of breadmaking.

When it comes to drinks books – Tom Morton, the author of Holy Waters which explores the link between faith and alcohol was awarded Drink Book of the Year, whilst brewer Jaega Wise, took home Debut Drink Book for Wild Brews, a guide on home-beer brewing using wild fermentation techniques.

Moving into television, Stanley Tucci was awarded best Programme for his Searching for Italy series, just pipping Big Zuu’s Big Eats and Nadiya’s Everyday Baking to the post.
