This Is Why You'll Never, Ever, Ever See The 'Justice League' #SnyderCut
Every so often, a ripple of energy courses through the Twitter and Reddit. If you listen closely, you can hear it on the breeze. "#ReleasetheSnyderCut," it whispers. "#ReleasetheSnyderCut, you cowards."
The so-called near-mythic Snyder cut is a radically different edit to the cinematic version of the ill-fated DC Comics superhero team-up Justice League which fans have been begging Warner Brothers to release for years now. Zak Snyder left the film after his daughter died, and Joss Whedon swept in to polish things off and add a slightly lighter tone. It didn't really work, and since then the supremacy of the Snyder cut – a finished version of the film entirely faithful to how Snyder originally wanted it – has become an article of faith for many DC fans.
With HBO Max, WarnerMedia's streaming platform, in the offing, there was hope among some fans that the Snyder cut could be available at last as part of a big curtain-raiser. However, it sounds like all their yearning – plus recent tweets by Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck during a Reddit-organised 'Day of Justice' tweetstorm – may go unanswered.
"That's a pipe dream," an insider told Variety. "There's no way it's ever happening."
The report goes on to dunk those hopes in icy water, then repeatedly stamp on them to make sure there's absolutely no chance of them coming back to life.
"Logistically," it says, "there's little appetite at the studio for spending the millions of dollars it would require to finish visual effects and editing work on Snyder's version, particularly as Justice League was a commercial disaster."
But that's not the end of it. Snyder himself wants the film out there, and regularly shares images from his version of the film on Vero, including of Batman leaping about and Willem Dafoe as Vulko, a role which was completely cut from Whedon's Justice League. The DC fans aren't about to give up yet.
