Why we’re taking inspiration from Anya Taylor-Joy and her collection of supersized sun hats
The Cannes Film Festival’s dress code holds a strange sartorial middle-ground – it’s resortwear, meets red carpet. Getting the brief exactly right as she touched down at Nice airport this week was Anya Taylor-Joy, whose first appearance of the festival saw her wearing an asymmetric orange dress with thigh-high split by Atlein, paired with an oversized raffia sun hat by Jacquemus. Sun-protection practicality, perhaps, but also incredibly chic.
Continuing her Riviera glam, she stepped out yesterday wearing a look from Jacquemus’ recent Le Mariage bridal collection, a strapless, sheer white dress featuring a train and delicate floral appliqué. This time, she accessorised with another large straw sunhat, secured with a black ribbon tied around her neck. One can’t help but wonder if Taylor-Joy is considering renewing her vows, having recently revealed she married the musician Malcolm McRae over a year ago.
The actress is in the South of France to promote her new movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, in which she stars opposite Chris Hemsworth. The film had a starry premiere on the famed Croisette red carpet last night, with Taylor-Joy dazzling in a custom Dior Couture gown and Tiffany & Co jewellery. While the look was undeniably beautiful, it's her classic-meets-quirky daytime style – complete with statement-making headwear – that's particularly inspiring our summer wardrobes.
As well as epitomising movie star-chic, floppy sun hats are of course perfect for protecting from the sun's harmful rays, particularly in the heat of the French Riviera – though don’t forget your SPF too.
