Why you should stop feeding your dog cheese

If you're been known to sneak your dog a nibble or two of cheese or other dairy products, it might be time to reconsider.

PDSA Veterinary Nurse Gemma Renwick tells Country Living: “Although it can be tempting to share additional treats with our four-legged friends, it’s important to understand that what we may see as a small treat can become a large amount of calories for our pets in addition to their daily meals."

And, according to PSDA research, more than 30% of dog owners regularly give their dogs cheese.

But can dogs eat cheese and is it safe for them? Two experts share everything to know...

Can dogs eat cheese?

According to Dr. Danielle Bernal, a veterinarian with Wellness Natural Pet Food, you should avoid feeding your dog cheese.

Dr. Danielle says dairy foods are on the list of the most common food allergies in canines. Plus, cheese is notorious for upsetting dogs' digestive systems.

In addition to inducing an upset stomach, cheese is high in calories and not a healthy option for your pet.

"Imagine eating over 11 pancakes in one sitting – well, if you have a small dog, that’s about how much your precious pooch is eating every time you give them just one cube of cheese," Gemma explains.

"In terms of calorie intake, just one cube of cheese is the equivalent of over 11 pancakes for a small dog, over six for a medium dog, and over 3.5 for a large-sized dog. So, while it may seem like a harmless little treat, one cube can pack over 110 extra calories, which is over 30% of a small dog’s daily calorific requirement.”

Dr. Danielle adds: "Nowadays, 59% of dogs are obese or overweight. Cheese is quite calorie-laden, it's not the healthiest, and they don't need it."

Just like their owners, dogs benefit from eating fibre, mineral, and moisture-rich fruits and veggies like watermelon, apples, and broccoli. To ensure your dog is getting the nutrition he or she needs, follow these guidelines:

  • Dogs need to eat a balanced diet, which includes a protein-packed meat base with healthy fats from a trusted wellness brand.

  • You can use fruits and veggies and mix-ins or toppings for your dog's favourite base if it seems like your dog is always hungry. Broccoli and apples are great options.

  • Serve dogs foods high in protein for healthy skin, coats, and muscle strength.

What happens if my dog eats cheese?

Some dogs experience digestive issues when eating cheese, such as gas production, cramping, pain and diarrhoea – plus regular consumption can lead to obesity.

Gemma stresses that overweight pets are more likely to suffer from health problems such as diabetes and urinary tract disease.

She adds: “Carrying excess fat can also worsen other health problems – such as arthritis and breathing difficulties – as well as increase anaesthetic and surgical risks, all of which could negatively affect your pet’s quality of life.”
