If, like me, you grew up in the 90s (Shhhh!), Saved By The Bell character Kelly Kapowski would likely have been one of your teenage icons. Not only did she have the undivided attention of dreamy school stud, Zack, she had a squad to rival Taylor Swift and rocked denim dungarees way before the Insta-set. Fast forward three decades (gulp) and Tiffani Thiessen is now a 42-year-old mother of two who also hosts her own cookery show Dinner at Tiffani’s.

But it’s her role as a mum that has been attracting headlines of late. Because though the former actress is still proudly breastfeeding her 9–month-old son, Holt, she has recently revealed she isn’t about to join the #Brelfie bunch.

Speaking to US Weekly about the subject of breastfeeding, the former teen-star revealed that she would rather sit on a toilet and nurse, rather than breastfeed in public.

“I think a woman should be able to breastfeed anywhere and everywhere,” she explained.

“I do what I need to do, but usually in a restroom … and sadly sit on a toilet and nurse my child. At the same time, I don’t judge women who … sit at a dinner table and do it.… It’s just not me.”

This isn’t the first time the actress, who is also mum to 5-year-old Harper with her husband, actor Brady Smith, has spoken about breastfeeding. While she has talked about the benefits of breastfeeding she has also revealed that she finds breastfeeding in public a little uncomfortable.

“I’m not that person who is going to whip up my boob and show everybody my breast,” she explained. “I just know how to cover it the right way.”

The cookery host also joked about how breastfeeding has affected her husband. “My poor husband hasn’t touched my boobs in six years or so,” she laughed in an interview with Taylor Strecker on the SiriusXM radio show Wake Up! With Taylor. “I feel bad for him. He goes ‘will they ever be mine again?’ and I’m like, ‘yeah, probably when they’re tightened up and fixed after I nursed two children!’“

Tiffani isn’t the only celebrity to speak out about finding breastfeeding in public uncomfortable. Earlier this year Kim Kardashian revealed that though she understands why people breastfeed in public, she wouldn’t want to do it because she wouldn’t feel comfortable having a stranger’s eyes on her.

"Now that I’m a mom, I say whatever makes you comfortable goes. I still personally wouldn’t breastfeed at a restaurant with a bunch of people I didn’t know staring at me. I’ve seen this before and remember tweeting how shocked I was. Now that I’m a mom, I’m not that shocked, especially if you have a few kids and can’t leave to breastfeed one kid in the bathroom while leaving the others at the table,” she wrote on her blog.

“But I still personally wouldn’t do it, unless it was an emergency situation and I was fully covered. I would however breastfeed in front of my girlfriends. I think it’s such a natural experience and I’m not shy about that.”

Actress Alyssa Milano shared this picture of her breastfeeding her daughter to Instagram [Photo: Instagram/milano_alyssa]

And earlier this year chatshow host Wendy Williams called out Alyssa Milano about breastfeeding in public. “I don’t need to see that,” she said, explaining that if it were her she would breastfeed her baby in the car. Milano who has long been an advocate for normalizing breastfeeding, countered that breasts were not sexual objects.

“Biologically they’re not made for sexual things, that’s what we’ve done to them,” she said.

Sam Faiers recently shared a couple of pictures of her breastfeeding her baby son, Paul, on a sunlounger and while some praised her for being a positive breastfeeding role-model, others criticised her choice to share what they believe should be a private moment with her 1.6 million Instagram followers.
