Why Cawsand in Cornwall should be your next staycation
You only know how much you need to escape the city when you find yourself packing the car, waking up at 5am and driving for five hours away from London towards the sea.
On arrival to 3 The Bay in sunny Cornwall, the unanswered emails and work-woes seemed to float away, as the panoramic views and sounds of the sea draw you in, almost like the white-noise machine you never knew you needed.
First impressions
As its name suggests, the self-catering apartment we booked through Beach Retreats, sits on the bay in Cawsand, so close, in fact, that the patio doors feel like they are opening into the sea of this former fishing village. Postcard-perfect views awash the open-plan living room and kitchen, with bi-folding doors that open onto a balcony above the beach.
The rooms
Views aside, the apartment is modern, clean and so brand-new that the sat nav struggled to recognise the postcode. Sleeping eight, the three bedrooms are bright and homely, two with ensuite bathrooms and a third family bathroom complete with a bathtub. The sofa bed can also be unfolded in the living room if need be. Whether you’ve got little ones in tow and want to be near the beach, or are finally organising that group get-together, you’ll find what you need and more here.
The food
When it comes to catering, the large kitchen is perfect for hosting. Complete with an island, a breakfast bar and a large dining table, the only thing we found missing was the all-important bottle opener (kindly, the restaurant downstairs came to the rescue). That said, if you are feeding the 5,000, it’s well worth getting food delivered on the day you arrive, as the nearest supermarket is a 30-minute drive away.
The local area
Known as Cornwall’s forgotten corner, Cawsand is beautiful. It’s not hard to see why artists flock to the little bay, complete with wooden boats and woodland border, and unlike pretty much everywhere else in Cornwall in the summer, you won’t find crowds of tourists.
Walk five minutes and you’ll reach the adjoining Kingsand bay, with a row of shops, friendly pubs and a great cup of coffee at The Old Bakery. The slightly livelier Whitsand Bay is about five miles away, with sandy beaches and the odd beach bar.
If you are after more than beaches and bakeries, the Cawsand ferry runs from the bay to Plymouth and it’s wide selection of restaurants and shops from Easter until the last Sunday of October.
Local restaurants
Of course, cooking on holiday won’t appeal to everyone. When it comes to eating out, the newly-opened The Bay restaurant downstairs is easy and affordable. The Devonport Inn is a five-minute walk away and is absolutely spectacular (but book ahead - larger tables go months in advance). The View restaurant is a short drive away and has spectacular views over Whitsand Bay and a brilliantly fresh menu of local produce. Finally, Canteen is worth a mention (and a visit), thanks to it’s lovely staff and fresh food.
Activities
Renting a stand-up paddleboard or kayak on the beach. The bay’s water is clear and calm, perfect for venturing into for a dip, albeit with the help of a canoe and wetsuit for those who aren’t a fan of the English sea temperatures.
3 The Bay with Beach Retreats offers a range of luxury beach retreats in Cornwall for parties and budgets of all sizes. Prices for a weeks stay start at £895.
