There’s some kind of magic present in the Algarve, the southern region of Portugal known for its stunning coastline, filled with white-sand beaches and towering rock formations. Now, a short 30 minutes from the country’s edge, a new hotel is showing off another side of the Algarve. The Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, which opened October 1, gives guests sweeping views of the Portuguese countryside, replete with citrus groves and fig trees. The luxury property, which is meant to embody a traditional village, boasts a collection of pools, restaurants, and amenities, including an 18-hole golf course. Specific to each Viceroy location, there’s also a menu of experiential offerings led entirely by locals that are meant to connect visitors to the traditions of the Algarve. And with a spa opening in the new year, the Viceroy at Ombria Algarve is making a strong case for why it should be on your 2025 bucket list. Below, a few more reasons to visit.

Prepared to be spoiled with choices. The Viceroy at Ombria Algarve boasts six places to dine, including a market and café where guests can pick up Portugal’s famed tart, the custardy pastel de nata. For meals all day, there’s the bright and airy Ombria Kitchen; Salpico provides booze and bites poolside; and golfers can visit the clubhouse’s laid-back Casa & Fora. Drinks continue to flow at Solalua, the resort’s lively destination for creative dishes and cocktails, as well as Bellvino, the property’s wine bar, complete with a selection of charcuterie, cheese, and olive oil. Though each place has its own unique personality, they all feature local produce—including some that’s been grown right on-site.

Be among the first to experience the 144-square-meter Spa by Viceroy, opening in early 2025 with a thermal pool and a wide selection of treatments, including beauty services. For now, peek at the existing menu, which includes a deep tissue massage, herbal compresses, and an “age-defying” facial. Therapists employ local herbs and flowers, and the property has partnered with a skin care brand from the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago, which sources ingredients from the area’s mineral-rich waters.
