Keeping your gut healthy has huge range of benefits. Recent studies have linked poor gut health to everything from weight issues to mental health disorders.

But, it doesn't have to be hard to look after.

If you want an easy way to boost your gut health, then TV medical personality Dr Rangan Chatterjee's simple diet tweak could be worth following.

Speaking to Get The Gloss about how to keep your gut healthy, Dr Chatterjee suggested adopting an '8 'till 8' eating rule for optimum health.

Put simply, this means consuming all of your food in a 12-hour window, from 8am until 8pm.

This, Dr Chatterjee claims, can help boost everything from your immune system to your weight loss potential.

"Try confining your eating window to 12 hours," Dr Chatterjee recommended. "Research shows that changing when you eat as well as what you eat can be beneficial in terms of weight loss, immune function, blood sugar balance and the health of your gut microbiome.

"If you give your gut bugs a break, you encourage the growth of other bacteria that help to clean out your gut lining."

He continued: "It’s not that hard either – ideally you’re sleeping for eight of those 12 hours. The modern world gets in the way, but try having breakfast at 8am, and finishing dinner around 8pm.

"It’s achievable for most of us, and the research indicates that it’s good in terms of longevity. It makes sense in terms of studies around circadian rhythms, and it’s a bit like sleeping – you need to give your brain a break. Same with your gut."
