Uh oh. Whoopi Goldberg isn’t going to be very popular after voicing her strong views on breastfeeding. The actress has already come under fire from a group of Facebook mums after a comment she made on US chat show “The View” earlier this week and no doubt she’ll receive a fair amount of backlash from breastfeeding advocates globally for voicing her opinion.

The “Sister Act” star was involved in a passionate debate about whether it’s acceptable to breastfeed another woman’s child – a subject that has hit headlines a number of times this year.

But Goldberg took things one step further by declaring: “If they’re old enough to have teeth, they shouldn’t be breastfeeding. Good god.” Considering most babies start teething at around six months old, the actresses comment suggests she thinks women shouldn’t nurse their child much longer than half a year.

After the programme aired, a Facebook group called Breastfeeding Mama Talk shared the clip and racked up a great deal of conflicting opinions on breastfeeding, reports Yahoo Parenting.

“The View needs to get it together and educate themselves before spewing such ignorance,” wrote one Facebook commenter.

Another disagreed: “I would never want someone else’s child on my breast, nor would I ever allow my child to be on someone else’s breast. Best friend, relative, I don’t care. In my opinion, there is a line of appropriateness, and that’s crossing it for me.”

This isn’t the first time Goldberg has caused a stir with take on breastfeeding. On The View in 2012, she referred to lactation consultants as “boneheads” during a conversation about a New York state initiative to provide more hospital support to new breastfeeding mums.

Here in the UK, “Strictly Come Dancing” star Jamelia generated controversy after revealing on “Loose Women” that she believes breastfeeding in public should be more discreet.

“One of the things I disagree with is these breastfeeding vigilantes who do that whole thing of, ‘I don’t care and I don’t care who feels uncomfortable.’ I do think that’s quite inconsiderate,” she said.

The pop star’s comments caused Twitter to explode with outraged viewers posting photos of her wearing revealing tops exposing her cleavage and nipples. “This @loosewomen guest thinks breastfeeding mums should cover up in public! We’ll use a cover when you do @Jamelia,” one viewer tweeted.

“Breastfeeders should cover up while feeding as to not offend? Really? Where’s your cover here?” another added.
