If it feels like AI is slowing taking over the world, it's because it is. And while we're confident personal trainers (and writers) are far from out of a job just yet, the technology is nevertheless expanding into the fitness industry.

The latest sports brand to harness artificial intelligence is Whoop, the team behind the athlete-endorsed health, performance and recovery tracking wearable.

Yesterday, Whoop revealed a new 'Coach' feature for its app powered by OpenAI, the developers behind ChatGPT, which is designed to answer your health and training queries with distinct and unique responses based on the data that your band has collected.

Whoop says the new feature will respond to your questions in a conversational tone, mimicking the way you might chat to a PT over text – all, it says, within seconds.

The new software will have an 'in-depth knowledge' of each user's goals and biometric data, which it can apply to the latest performance science to generate individualised feedback and advise, and is powered by Whoop's own algorithms and custom-built machine learning model.

What is Whoop?

Whoop is a wearable fitness device that monitors your health and training data like respiratory rate, heart rate and skin temperature and translates it into actionable metrics, like a recovery, strain and sleep score.

Unlike fitness trackers from the likes of Garmin, Apple and Polar, Whoop bands focus solely on data, doubling down on the health metrics that it measures, without the added extras you find with smartwatches, like GPS tracking, music compatibility or even a display.

Whoop bands are also designed to be worn 24/7. In fact, you can now even charge your Whoop as your wear it, removing any gaps in data tracking.

What is Whoop Coach?

Whoop has given a few examples of the types of queries that its new Coach feature will be able to answer:

  • Bespoke training plans and recommendations: You'll now be able to get custom-designed plans, routines, recipes and recommendations based on your data and goals. For example: 'What's a good workout for me today?'

  • Insights into the unknown: Whoop Coach can search through thousands of your data points to identify why you’re feeling the way you are and exactly what affects performance. For example, it can tell you why you might be feeling tired or ill.

  • Expansive information on key performance topics: It'll also help you to better understand what different performance concepts and topics mean by explaining what a variable heart rate is and what a different training zones are for, and apply it to your own data.

  • Comparisons: Whoop Coach will also allow you to see how you compare to people of a similar age and body type.

If you're concerned about privacy, Whoop says that your conversations with the Coach feature will not be accessed by the brand without your consent and that your data is not stored with 3rd parties.
