Wetherspoons responds to 'unpleasant behaviour' fears at new 'Tory town' pub
Wetherspoons has responded to 'drunkenness and unpleasant behaviour' concerns after a new pub in a 'Tory town' received full planning approval.
The former Sant' Angelo restaurant, also known as The Angel, in Wetherby, was acquired by Tim Martin's JD Wetherspoon in September 2022. After more than two years of delays and U-turns, full planning permission for redevelopment of the site, which includes demolishing part of the building, was granted by Leeds City Council on Thursday, January 16.
Residents expressed fears at the time of the pub chain attracting anti-social behaviour to their 'Tory town' known for its flower displays and peaceful country walks. Wetherspoons responded that 'people in the townwill welcome' the pub on High Street, pointing out their national chain has been accredited by Best Bar None.

Best Bar None is accreditation given to pubs for excellence in public safety and responsible management practices.
Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are delighted that Wetherspoon has been granted planning permission for its pub in Wetherby. We are confident that people in the town will welcome this."
Wetherspoons weren't able to confirm dates for when work on the site would start or when doors would finally be opening to punters.
Mr Gershon went on: "At present there are no on site or opening dates. Wetherspoon has a very good reputation for the manner in which its pubs are operated and managed.
“It has been awarded numerous Best Bar None by the police, local councils and licensing authorirites. It is important that our pubs work with the local community to ensure there are no issues and we will do this.”
When plans for the pub were first announced, Wetherspoons said the redevelopment would cost £2.25m. Mr Gershon added this was an approximation but remained an accurate figure to use.
