If you've received a rescheduled wedding invitation in lockdown then you're far from alone. For couples who were getting married this summer, the coronavirus pandemic has thrown their plans into disarray – changing the date of their big day and, quite possibly, the nuptials they had planned altogether.

This has a knock-on impact on what weddings will look like in 2021 and beyond. From downsized weekday ceremonies to wearing more than one wedding dress, Sarah Allard, editor of wedding planning website Hitched.co.uk, shares her wedding trend predictions for 2021...

Trend 1: Micro-weddings

Micro-weddings – with fewer than 20 guests – are set to be popular in 2021 as couples look for ways to spend more quality time in an intimate setting with the people that matter the most.

By downsizing their guest-lists, brides and grooms can splash out on creating unforgettable experiences for their nearest and dearest – such as amazing food and entertainment.

Trend 2: Acts of gratitude

If the global pandemic has taught us anything it’s that we should cherish our family and friends more than ever.

Couples marrying in 2021 will be keen to show their love and affection for guests with small acts of gratitude on the day, from personal notes on place settings to arranging for special guests to take flowers home at the end of the day.

Trend 3: Weekday weddings

With a lot of 2020’s weddings postponed until 2021, weekday weddings will certainly be on the rise and a big trend for next year.

A weekday wedding is a brilliant option for couples; not only can you expect to pay a lot less than you would for a weekend date but there’s more likelihood of your dream venue and supplier team being available too.

Trend 4: Simple silhouettes

Whether it’s because they’re hosting a smaller wedding day than originally planned or because there’s something incredibly chic about a simple wedding dress, I think we can expect to see a lot of brides opting for a more minimal look in 2021.

It’s likely a lot of brides will go for more than one gown too, perhaps choosing a simple slip for a small celebration and then ‘going big’ with a romantic, dramatic dress for their reception at a later date.

Trend 5: Sustainability

This is a trend that certainly won’t be going anywhere for 2021 as couples embrace even more ways to ensure their wedding is eco-friendly.

Keeping food and flowers locally-sourced, avoiding plastic and gifting plants that can be repotted as your wedding favours are all great ways for couples to keep sustainability in mind.
