Weather maps suggest Scotland could soon be encircled by a “wall of snow,” with forecasters predicting a spell of wintry conditions in the coming days.

The latest forecasts indicate a surge of cold air and precipitation could bring significant snowfall and freezing temperatures across much of the UK, particularly in northern regions, Express reports.

WXCharts forecasts that northern and northwestern Scotland could face bouts of heavy rain and snow as strong winds and colder air sweep in.

Meanwhile, southern parts of the UK are expected to remain drier with lighter winds. However, more settled conditions may lead to an increase in freezing fog and overnight frosts.

Weather maps indicate that snow depth levels could rise across Scotland and parts of northern England by Sunday, February 9, as colder conditions take hold.

Minimum temperature projections suggest widespread lows of -1°C to 3°C, with even colder pockets where frost and freezing fog develop overnight. Meanwhile, the Met Office’s long-range forecast highlights a mix of contrasting weather patterns expected in early February.

The Met Office stated: “Cloud and periods of wet weather will probably affect northern and northwestern parts of the UK at times, particularly early in this period. Some heavy rain is possible which could be accompanied by spells of strong winds."

For southern areas, a drier and more settled period is anticipated, though occasional rain showers cannot be ruled out entirely. “Winds will be lighter, bringing the risk of mist and freezing fog patches along with overnight frosts,” the Met Office explained.

While much of the UK is set to experience typical seasonal temperatures, northern and northwestern regions may see occasional milder spells.

With snow and icy conditions on the horizon, transport and public safety officials are urging caution, particularly in areas prone to heavy snowfall or freezing fog.

In the north, the focus will be on navigating hazardous conditions, while those in southern regions may need to prepare for frosty mornings and colder starts to the day.

The "wall of snow" will follow a wave of heavy snow, set to sweep across the UK in the wake of Storm Eowyn, bringing a deep freeze to parts of Scotland.

The first snowfall is expected to hit the west of Scotland on Thursday, January 3, with Fort William bracing for icy conditions. A bitterly cold weekend will follow, with temperatures plunging to -4°C in some areas of the Highlands.

Forecasters predict a 570-mile snow blitz stretching across the UK next week, with the heaviest snowfall expected in Argyll and Bute, the Highlands, and Glasgow.
