There are scenes in their new psychological thriller, The Substance, in which Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore wear full-body prosthetic suits. 'Mine took between five and six hours to put and two hours to take off,' Qualley tells ELLE UK in a game of Knowing Me, Knowing You.

Without spoiling the very premise and plot of the film itself, Moore's prosthetics took even longer. 'My prosthetics were anywhere from six to nine hours, depending on how much we were doing on that day,' she says, adding: 'And then we'd have to rush to shoot with the little time we had left.'

After correctly guessing the co-star of hers who shaved their head for a leading role (Moore for GI Jane, of course), Qualley confesses that the most intense thing she's ever done was, in fact, the prosthetics for The Substance. The film, which riffs on misogyny and body-objectification, was met with 13-minute ovation at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the longest a title received at this year’s event.

While far from an easy watch, The Substance makes for a gripping, confronting and, at times, frightening viewer experience, one which feels like a cautionary tale against the marketing machines of anti-ageing that so many of us succumb to.

If anything, Qualley and Moore are happier today than they were in their younger years. 'You gain wisdom, comfort in your own skin, humility, and I think a deeper appreciation for life,' Moore says sagely when listing the things she most loves about getting older.

Qualley, who married her husband Jack Antonoff earlier this year, smiles and agrees. 'I'm having more fun the older I get.'

From their favourite cities (spoiler alert: London's up there with the best of them), to Moore's predilection for collecting miniature, well, everything, watch Margaret Qualley and Demi Moore's game of Knowing Me, Knowing You at the top of this article.

The Substance is out in UK cinemas September 20.
