WandaVision director Matt Shakman has addressed speculation that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen might have a cameo on the show.

Elizabeth Olsen, one of the programme’s two leads with Paul Bettany, is Mary-Kate and Ashley’s younger sister. WandaVision borrows from the world of classic American sitcoms such as Full House – in which Mary-Kate and Ashley starred as children.

This has led to some rumours –and hope from fans – that Mary-Kate and Ashley might make an appearance in WandaVision.

Shakman, however, appears to have poured water on that speculation. In a recent interview with Variety, he was asked: “Did you think about asking Lizzie to ask her sisters to do a cameo on the series?”

The director replied: “For us, we were faithfully recreating the style of the shows with authenticity. It wasn’t about parody or homage or spoof. It really was about telling the story of Wanda and Vision.”

Storytelling, he explained, took priority over cameos. “And so, for that reason, we were focusing on our characters who are the best actors to bring those characters to life, rather than trying to find a way to have Bob Newhart pop by,” Shakman added.

Earlier this month, Elizabeth Olsen was asked about a possible crossover between WandaVision and Full House during a humorous segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “That would be incredible,” she mused. “It is very meta, the whole thing.”

The first two episodes of WandaVision are now available on Disney+.
