For the past seven years, the Dutton family ranch has stood as a symbol for the last vestiges of the great American dream. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) protected his slice of Montana heaven every episode of Yellowstone until his untimely death. Sunday’s season 5 finale will reveal the ranch’s fate one last time.

There’s a fair amount of mystery surrounding which character will end up with the ranch, should it survive the finale at all. An evil hedge fund named Market Equities seeks to turn the land into an airport. Until a few days ago, that was a real possibility. The villains killed John Dutton, and Beth’s (Kelly Reilly) plan to preserve parts of land in her father’s name seemed only temporary. Thanks to some major updates, it now seems like the Dutton family ranch isn’t going anywhere.

According to Deadline, Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) and Reilly are reportedly set to reprise their roles in a new Yellowstone spin-off series. At the same time, the most recent episode paved a way forward for the Dutton family with Kayce’s (Luke Grimes) well-timed tax loophole. “[It's] the only way to save this place,” he says. “You got to give it away.”

According to Grimes, the answer should feel obvious by now. “You could probably put it together at this point, if you really sat down and thought about it,” he told Esquire ahead of the finale. “I was wondering too, how this entire sprawling storyline was going to come together in just one episode. But Taylor did it.”

So… who’s the lucky recipient of the ranch? That’s what we’re all waiting to find out. There are a few options—such as John Dutton’s grandson, Tate (Brecken Merrill), or the semi-adopted ranch hand, Carter (Finn Little)—but Kayce seems to have a connection with someone from outside the ranch. Hopefully, Taylor Sheridan’s Travis Wheatley character won't rear his head in the finale. I would also hate to see the Clyburns arrive and purchase the land to set up The Madison. Sorry Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith), but I think the old cowboy is out, too. The best thing for Sheridan to do at this point is just satisfy the fans.

Will Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) claim the Dutton family ranch? Emerson Miller - Paramount

If you ask Reddit viewers, a growing majority hope that the Dutton Ranch lands back in Indigenous hands. Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) could easily swoop in and save the day for the Dutton family. He’s long held a connection with Kayce and his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), since the series began. Plus, an omen from Yellowstone’s 1883 spin-off may have already sealed their fate.

At the end of the limited series, the Duttons settle in Montana after one of their own passes away. A Native American leader named Spotted Eagle tells them of the eventual spot where the Yellowstone ranch is established, but he warns them that, "in seven generations, my people will rise up and take it back from you." James Dutton (Tim McGraw) responds, “In seven generations, you can have it."

When asked about the prophetic conversation, Yellowstone season 5 director and executive producer Christina Voros told Hollywood Reporter, “It’s hard to say how much to read into it because there are so many threads dangled between these worlds that one could follow.” Vague! Let's just hope the series fares better than last week.

Fans will find out for sure when Yellowstone’s season 5 finale airs for a special hour-and-and-half-long episode this Sunday.
