Spoilers for Vigil season 2 follow.

Vigil boss Tom Edge has opened up about a potential third season of the hit BBC show.

Vigil follows Suranne Jones as Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva, whose investigations into a missing fishing trawler and a nuclear submarine death result in conflict between her and British security services.

Season two of Vigil continues the inspector's investigations and is currently airing on BBC One, though all six episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer. No third season has been announced yet, but in a new interview with Hello! Magazine, Edge said he's open to the idea.

"I think we never take anything for granted in terms of actors because our actors are incredible and have so many jobs and it's a useful thought to think we have to have a shot at earning their time and their pick. That is a reasonably high bar," Edge said.

"If we think about doing that, it has to feel like there's something urgent to be said, both on a character level and in terms of the domain that we may enter to unpack those questions. But I will say, the world does not seem short on turbulence and on questions."

Rose Leslie, who was pregnant in real life while her character Kirsten Longacre was expecting hers and Amy's first child together, joked: "Well I've got to get pregnant again, then series three is a go!"

Vigil season 2 airs on BBC One and on iPlayer.
