I’ve tried many products for frizzy hair, but these are the best ones around
You’re probably here because you’re in a deep Googling hole trying to work out how to smooth frizzy hair. Am I right? I've been there – and know so many friends, family and beauty editors who share the struggle too.
Achieving a sleek finish can feel like a never-ending quest: and is a mission that anyone with frizz-, flyaway-prone hair will find even harder. But while we've all been seduced by a glossy shine at some point, it’s important to note that frizz isn't something you should feel obliged to get rid of you don’t want to (or simply, can’t be bothered to).
Many of us deal with puff-ups on a regular basis; straight hair can still experience seasonal static, coily hair types will find that frizz is just a common side serving, and even bleach blondes will see a texture change from hours sat in the salon chair.
When I let my hair run free (a.k.a looking a little fluffy) I often think it looks quite cute. But occasionally, I’m after a smoother finish and a swoosh worthy of the Met Gala red carpet. So, if you’re looking for ways to turn down the volume, I know of some excellent products that are up for the task.
If there's one hero that never lets me down, it’s the Hershesons Almost Everything Cream. The clever formula controls frizz, boosts shine and primes all in one go – a savvy way to streamline your routine.
Those with thick and dry hair types will enjoy the rich texture of Fable and Mane’s Smooth and Shine Oil, while fine strands will love the delicate touch of Living Proof’s No Frizz spray. You can also go above and beyond and invest in a silk pillowcase to finalise a polished look.
I’ve worked my way through many bottles that sell the dream to those with frizz-inclined hair. Only a few, however, go the extra mile in sealing down strands that refuse to be tamed.
If your interest has been piqued, scroll down to discover the best products for frizzy hair. There's a styling tool that would be my 'desert island' can't-live-without pick, and a smoothing serum that has permanent residency in my collection.
The best hair products for taming frizz...
1. Hershesons, Almost Everything Cream
I know it’s hard to believe, but this cream really does it all. Smooth a few pumps through your lengths and it will define chaotic curls, reduce frizz and moisturise dry ends. Use it in any way you’d like: apply it to damp hair to prime before styling, as a leave-in mask for additional nourishment, or through dry ends for a shiny finish. I’m not the only fan either, it happens to be Keira Knightley’s favourite too.
2. Living Proof, Frizz Smooth Styling Spray
Living Proof’s No Frizz line is an all-star one for any hair type, but if you’ve got fine hair, make good use of this delicate spray. The non-sticky formula mists over your strands to protect them from humidity, ensuring a frizz-free finish that lasts from morning to night. It even offers heat protection for a safe session with your straightener.
3. Fable and Mane, Smooth and Shine Hair Oil
Those with type 4 hair will need a richer formula to fight frizz, which is where Fable and Mane’s Smooth and Shine oil comes in. Formulated with ashwagandha (an ayurvedic root found in many of the brand’s oils), it keeps your strands strong but looking glossy too. You can apply it to damp hair before styling or on dry ends for some added shine – an easy way to incorporate an indulgent ritual into your daily routine.
4. Virtue, Healing Oil
Sealing the deal with an oil is a great way to eliminate static and support fragile strands. If you’re looking for the best of the best, not much tops Virtue’s unique formula. It’s designed with the brand’s patented keratin which is sourced from human hair (ethically, of course). This super-effective protein clings itself onto the areas of damage, helping to build stronger and healthier lengths.
Pleasingly, the formula is super lightweight so you can apply it on both wet and dry hair without feeling a greasy residue. If you haven’t stocked up on this incredibly hard-working oil, it’s time to join the club.
5. L'Oréal Paris, Wonder Water
Every beauty editor I know raves about L’Oreal’s Wonder Water. The secret to its success is down to lamellar technology which, in a nutshell, uses tiny molecules to create an outer layer around your strands. They coat damaged areas and penetrate the cuticle, delivering amino acids and protein to the sections that need them
After your shampoo, section your hair and splash the liquid from roots to ends. You don’t even have to follow up with a conditioner, so you’ll be saving time and water too.
As a result, you’re left with a glossy shine in a matter of seconds (well, eight to be exact).
6. Aveda, Smooth Infusion Anti-Frizz Conditioner
Fighting frizz starts with the products you take into the shower, which is where your conditioner comes into the picture. Aveda’s Smooth Infusion formula features on many an editor’s shortlist for its ability to deeply nourish without weighing down your strands. Babassu oil keeps them hydrated and once dried you’re left with soft, tangle-free lengths.
7. Kitsch, Microfibre Hair Towel
Swapping out your classic cotton towel for a microfibre one will make all the difference. The uber-absorbent material wraps around your head and does a quick job of soaking up moisture. With a snug fit, you’re also less likely to rub which can cause breakage. A simple switch, but you’ll be reaping the results.
8. Revlon, One Step Dryer and Volumiser
Slathering on the best frizz-fighting creams is the cake, but the cherry on top comes from your styling tools. To help lock down flyaways, the Revlon hot brush is one smooth operator. Rather than doing a rough job with a dryer (which will likely lead to a tousled finish), the rounded brush will create a sleek, salon-like blow-dry in minutes.
9. Colour Wow, Dream Coat
When I was going through a post-breakup ‘I-need-to-dye-my-hair-blonde' phase, I stockpiled this sleek spray. After loading my virgin hair with tonnes of bleach, you can only imagine the kind of brittle, straw-like strands I was dealing with. But this shine-enhancing spray helped me out, big time.
Dubbed as a raincoat for your hair, the formula acts like a water repellent, helping to keep your strands smooth throughout the most humid or drizzly climates (I even went for a walk in the rain to prove it, which you can see for yourself here).
10. Kitsch, Satin Pillowcase
If bedhead is proving problematic (don’t worry, we’ve all been there) it may be worth investing in a pillowcase upgrade. Silk fibres are much smoother than cotton, so they’ll cause less friction which equals less frizz and tangles. They look chic and they’ll keep you feeling cool throughout the night. Dreamy.
