Tackle humid climates or stubborn flyaways with these frizz-fighting hair products

The best anti-frizz products for the sleek strandscourtesy of brands

So you've found yourself in a Googling hole trying to find the best products for frizzy hair. Am I right? I've been there – and I know so many friends, family and beauty editors who share the struggle too.

Achieving a sleek finish can feel like a never-ending quest, and is a mission that anyone with flyaway-prone hair will find even harder. But, while we've all been seduced by a glossy shine at some point, it’s important to note that frizz isn't something you should feel obliged to get rid of if you don’t want to (or simply, can’t be bothered to).

Many of us deal with puff-ups on a regular basis; straight hair can still experience seasonal static, coily hair types will find that frizz is just a common side serving, and even bleach blondes will see a texture change from hours sat in the salon chair. But, if you’re looking for ways to turn down the volume, I know of some excellent products that are up for the task.

If there's one hero that never lets me down, it’s the Hershesons Almost Everything Cream. The clever formula controls frizz, boosts shine and primes all in one go. Those with thick and dry hair types will enjoy the rich texture of Creightons Miracle Serum, while fine strands will love the delicate touch of Living Proof’s No Frizz spray.

How we test

I’ve worked my way through many bottles that sell the dream to those with frizz-inclined hair. As someone with a bleaching history, I have many frail and flimsy strands that need serious smoothing. Only a few, however, go the extra mile in sealing down strands that refuse to be tamed. The top performers created a sleek result that survived humid tube journeys to work, while also impressing on price point and texture.

The best hair products for taming frizz...

1. Living Proof, Frizz Smooth Styling Spray

Living Proof’s No Frizz line is an all-star one for any hair type, but if you’ve got fine hair, make good use of this delicate spray. The non-sticky formula mists over your strands to protect them from humidity, ensuring a frizz-free finish that lasts from morning to night. It even offers heat protection for a safe session with your straightener.

2. Hershesons, Almost Everything Cream

I know it’s hard to believe, but this cream really does it all. Smooth a few pumps through your lengths and it will define chaotic curls, reduce frizz and moisturise dry ends.

Use it in any way you’d like: apply it to damp hair to prime before styling, as a leave-in mask for additional nourishment, or through dry ends for a shiny finish. I’m not the only fan either, it happens to be Keira Knightley’s favourite too.

3. Percy & Reed, I Need A Hero! Wonder Balm

Percy & Reed's Wonder Balm is a fine example of a multi-tasker, designed to streamline your routine in many ways. You can use it as a leave-on treatment to prime the hair before heat styling, but also to smooth frizz, create definition and increase shine.

The formula may be rich and deeply nourishing, but it doesn't weigh down strands or encourage build-up; hair will remain full of volume and life. It's is truly deserving of its name.

4. Colour Wow, Dream Coat

I stockpiled this sleek spray when I went through a spontaneous blonde phase. After loading my virgin hair with tonnes of bleach, you can only imagine the kind of brittle, straw-like strands I was dealing with. But this shine-enhancing spray helped me out, big time.

Dubbed as a raincoat for your hair, the formula acts like a water repellent helping to keep your strands smooth throughout drizzly climates (I even went for a walk in the rain to prove it, which you can see for yourself here).

5. Shark SpeedStyle 3-in-1 hair dryer

The RapidGloss Finisher on Shark's SpeedStyle is an instant frizz eliminator. It uses the Coanda Effect (the same technology used on Dyson's Airwrap) to attract hair to the attachment, instantly smoothing flyaways and leaving an ultra-shiny finish.

Once I've gone in with my styling treatments, I use this as the finishing touch to flatten wispy baby hairs and the halo of frizz that sits on the top of my head. A real must-have for super-sleek styles.

6. Amika Smooth Over Frizz-Fighting Treatment Mask

Glycolic aid to smooth frizz? Yep, Amika's latest launch is reinventing the flyaway-fighting wheel. The rinse out treatment creates a layer over strands to seal frizz and smooth frazzled lengths, preventing moisture from creeping in that causes puff-ups.

After conditioning, saturate your hair in the liquid and leave for 10 seconds before rinsing. Once dried, hair will feel ridiculously soft and swish with a glassy shine. I'll take 10.

7. Tresemmé Lamellar Shine Cream

Tresemmé harnesses lamellar technology in its shine cream – a popular treatment used to promise glossy, silky and liquid-like hair. Essentially, tiny molecules coat strands to heal, detangle and unlock shine without weighing anything down.

Often, you'll find the technology infused in water treatments that can be rinsed away in the shower, but Tresemmé has formulated it in this leave-in cream. Simply smooth a few pumps through freshly washed hair and the amino acids will strengthen brittle strands and create a salon-like shine.

8. Got2b Glued Brows and Edges Gel

This little yellow tube is worth stockpiling if your go-to look is a slicked back bun or if you're in need of a good edge control product. The Got2b Glued Gel comes with a mascara-like wand so you can directly pull the tool through your hair to fix down flyaways.

The best part? The invisible gel dries down without leaving any flaky residue, and you can break the product down by simply brushing your hair.

9. John Frieda, Frizz Ease Miraculous Recovery Shampoo

Your journey to smooth hair begins with the shampoo you take into the shower, so why not go for the stalwart in the fizz-fighting industry? John Frieda's Miraculous Recovery Shampoo is designed with flyaways and fluff in mind.

Even after one use, the lustrous formula is proven to deeply cleanse straggly strands while simultaneously taming frizz and XXL volume. Tapping into the protective powers of ceramides, the formula will also aid hydration, leaving you with a lucent shine.

10. Hair by Sam McKnight, Curl Cleanse Conditioner

Sam McKnight's Curl Cleanse may be billed as a conditioner, but it will also help to keep curls nourished and defined way beyond wash day.

This product is packed with a restoring mix of vitamins, minerals and essential oils which help to hydrate low-porosity stands and promote manageability. And if you enjoy delicately scented showers, Curl Cleanse is fragranced with McKnight's signature (and utterly addictive) floral blend inspired by his garden.

11. Fable & Mane, HoliRoots Hair Oil

Fable & Mane's HoliRoots oil is ideal for curls and coils. Deep rooted in traditional Indian hair-oiling rituals, the founders of Fable & Mane formulated this elixir to provide deep nourishment to low-porosity strands.

Enriched with safflower, sesame and jojoba, alongside strengthening ashwagandha, only a few drops are needed to boost shine and manageability.

12. Gisou, Honey Infused Hair Repair Serum

Every aesthetically-pleasing shower houses a baby-pink bottle of Gisou. But, have a scroll through the founder Negin Mirsalehi's Instagram page and you'll understand that this brand is far more than just a pretty face. All of its products are infused with honey from the Mirsalehi Bee Garden in Iran, which acts as a natural humectant to hydrate brittle strands.

The OG hair oil will remain a beauty cupboard mainstay for boosting shine but for all things frizz, I'm turning to the Hair Repair Serum. Honey beads are bound within a silky serum which burst as you rub the elixir into your strands. While this is undeniably fun to do, the real allure is in the sleek and luscious finish it gives.

13. Bumble and bumble, Hairdresser's Invisible Oil

If you want to whittle down your hair products to one 'does-all' product, please pay attention to this multi-purpose oil from Bumble and Bumble.

Despite the name, it behaves more like a leave-in conditioner as opposed to an oil, protecting, conditioning and hydrating your strands in just a couple of spritzes. But even with such power, the formula feels light and airy without turning tacky – something that many formulas fall guilty of.

14. Creightons, Frizz No More Sleek & Shine Miracle Serum

If the cause of your frizz is from dry and brittle strands, consider this 'miracle' serum from Creightons. Infused with moisturising agents like meadowfarm and argan oil, you can either smooth the serum over damp ends or use it as a de-puffer to reduce frizz and volume after you blow dry. Harnessing the moisture-sealing benefits of an oil, it'll also deliver that same glossiness you get after a session in a salon chair.

15. Kitsch, Satin Pillowcase

If bedhead is proving problematic (don’t worry, we’ve all been there) it may be worth investing in a pillowcase upgrade.

Silk fibres are much smoother than cotton, so they’ll cause less friction which equals less frizz and tangles. They look chic and they’ll keep you feeling cool throughout the night. Dreamy.
