With Valentine's Day just around the corner, flower sales will boom as loved-up romantics snap them up to declare their love.

Being gifted a beautiful bouquet of flowers is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and make you feel loved.

But flowers don't last for ever and sadly they can wilt and die and be heading for the bin just days later.

That's unless you follow the advice of instagram user Heather Fields, whose handle is @forty_something. She has shared her tips for helping your Valentine's flowers bloom for 'weeks'.

And it involves using something that you would normally reserve for cleaning the toilet bowl.

Heather explained to her 9,200 followers her hack for helping flowers to last involved a couple of drops of bleach in the water.

She said the addition of the powerful cleaning agent, which can be bought from most supermarkets for around 65 pence, rids the stems of any bacteria and helps them to live for longer.

To make the most of your flowers there are a few things you should do.

Firstly she advised cutting the stems at an angle and then to grab a vase and add water.

But before you put the flowers in the vase she has suggested a few more things you can do. She said: "You're going to put just a couple of drops of bleach, a smidge of bleach to kill any bacteria."

She then added sugar to the vase of water and bleach which she explained would 'nourish' the blooms.

Heather suggests changing the water every few days. She also said, when putting the flowers in the vases, to make sure there are no leaves in there.

And she said: "I have made flowers last about two weeks doing this trick."

Another tip from her was to put them into your fridge overnight if you have the room to do this. She said that this will also keep them fresh for longer.

Martha Stewart has also recommended the hack, saying just a quarter of a teaspoon of bleach in the water helps to keep the water bright and clean.

She said if you notice the vase water going green to replace it with fresh water and a little bit more bleach and your flowers will last a lot longer.

I have made flowers last about two weeks doing this trick.
