From buying up ALL the loo roll to meeting their mates in the pub, some people have been less than helpful during the coronavirus pandemic, but now we have a new term to describe them - covidiots.

Urban Dictionary recently coined the term covidiot which applies to those who go against public health advice amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Defined as “someone who ignores the warnings regarding public health or safety” or “a person who hoards goods, denying them from neighbours.”

The online dictionary gives examples of how the phrase can be used, including: “Did you see that covidiot with 300 rolls of toilet paper in his basket?”

The new definition has been voted up hundreds of times by users of the website.

And of course, Twitter users were quick to give the new word the thumbs up emoji.

Last week Boris Johnson told all Britons to avoid social contact, ditch non-essential travel and work from home – if possible – for the foreseeable future.

The prime minister took it a step further on Friday, telling pubs, restaurants, gyms and cinemas to close.

The public has also been advised not to panic buy certain goods, leaving none for others in need.

But it seems some of us having been getting the stay-safe memo.

At a Downing Street press conference, NHS England National Medical Director Stephen Powis said people stockpiling essentials including food, medicine, and toilet paper “should be ashamed”.

And let’s face it we all know someone who might fall into this category right now.

Shape up covidiots.
