Taking place in Glasgow’s Stallan Brand Gallery until 16 August, ‘Under One Roof’ shines a light on Scotland’s dynamic design scene through a diverse selection of cherry-picked furniture, homeware and art. Each piece has been selected by young Edinburgh-based design platform Slancha.

‘We’re incredibly excited to bring together such a talented group of designers under one roof,’ says Slancha co-founder Harvey Everson. ‘This exhibition is a celebration of unique design languages, creativity and craftsmanship found in Scotland.’

Everything on show is also available to purchase, and pieces are united by their simple, artisanal aesthetic. Among the highlights is Nicholas Davis’s characterful ‘Fireside Chair’ (above, £2,850) and matching stool (£470) both of which are made of African Sapele wood, a versatile hardwood timber with a warm reddish-brown hue. Meanwhile, Oliver Spendley’s ‘Endless Orbit 02’ (below, £1,400), which is made from a stone called Scottish Lewisian Gneiss that he sourced from a remote cove in the north west Highlands and timber, is a totemic sculpture that tells an enchanting narrative. A selection of Slancha’s own in-house designed pieces is also on display.

‘Each piece tells a story and reflects the unique vision of its creator. Under One Roof is not just an exhibition; it’s an exploration of the rich design heritage of Scotland and its future,’ Everson explains. ‘Each designer carefully considers the value of form, function, aesthetic and craftsmanship throughout their work.’

Attendees will have the opportunity to interact directly with the works, experiencing the different textures and materials firsthand. This unusual curatorial approach invites visitors to explore the boundaries between art and design, providing an original, tactile experience.

Launched in 2022 by designers Harvey Everson and Findlay MacDonald, Slancha focuses on bespoke projects and pieces, aiming to help ‘designers to showcase their talents to a wider audience’. ‘Whether it’s creating bespoke work or producing limited-edition runs, we champion unique design that is as comfortable in a gallery as it is the home,’ MacDonald explains.

It is just one of a number of new design platforms quietly democratising the design industry as consumers increasingly reject mass-produced, unsustainable and impersonal objects. Other platforms with a similar agenda include Atelier 100, an annual pop-up showroom open during London Design Festival that stocks locally made products by independent designers, and Fels, which showcases contemporary design through tailored exhibitions, online collections and exclusive editions.

Under One Roof is taking place at a pivotal time, as awareness and appreciation of Scottish design continues to grow. In under two months, Dundee Design Festival will attract more visitors to the country, with what promises to be the world’s most sustainable design festival. slancha.com
