The Under-$1,000 Mattress That's Kept Me Comfy for 5 Years Is on Sale for Presidents' Day

If you're shopping for a mattress this Presidents' Day and need to spend less than $1,000, your search ends here. When I bought my Tuft & Needle Original Mattress five years ago, I was ditching an old spring mattress and wanted to make the switch to foam, but I also needed a budget-friendly option since I was moving at the time. I did extensive research to find the best foam mattresses within my price range and landed on Tuft & Needle. It seemed to be a Goldilocks mattress that had a lot of the things I was looking for within the basic model, like cooling technology and motion isolation. (Plus, both the company and reviewers claimed it was good for stomach sleepers like myself—controversial, I know!).
Before I get into my five-year experience with the mattress, here's the important part: Tuft & Needle is one of the many mattress brands hosting a sale this weekend. You can take 20% off any Tuft & Needle mattress on both the brand's DTC site or Amazon storefront. Both offer free shipping, but you might get it faster if you order on Amazon. I ordered from DTC and had a seamless experience.
Original Adaptive Foam Mattress
The baseline "adaptive foam" mattress has medium support that’s not too firm or too soft. I share the bed with my partner and we have different preferences (he likes a plush mattress and I like firm), so this has been a good middle ground. After sleeping on it for five years, it’s a bit softer than when I first got it.
As most boxed foam mattresses recommend, I unboxed and let it sit out overnight before sleeping on it (though technically the brand says you can sleep on it after three hours). I have a platform bed frame, so set-up was super simple and didn’t require a box spring. It has a low profile that fit into my bed frame nicely.
Two things I've been consistently impressed with are the motion isolation and the mattress cover. My partner has a more routine sleep schedule than me, so I’m often getting into or out of bed while he’s asleep. Although a very light sleeper, he’s rarely disturbed. The motion isolation works hand-in-hand with the mattress's decent edge support (read: if you sit on the edge, you shouldn’t sink in), meaning you’re able to take full advantage of the surface area of the mattress. If you move around a lot when you sleep, you can comfortable go all the way up to the edge to avoid disturbing the person sleeping next to you.
As for the cover, it has a waffle-like texture to it. It stays cool to the touch and you can almost feel it through the sheets. It has held up well and still looks bright white and hasn’t pilled or showed much wear and tear. (Note: I use a mattress protector.)
This is my experience with the Tuft & Needle Original Adaptive Foam Mattress, the brand's entry-level, no-frills option. Tuft & Needle also offers a hybrid mattress with coils for those looking for a bit more support, a Mint mattress with enhanced cooling features, and a Mint hybrid, which combines all of those features. They are all 20% off right now.
Bottom line: Tuft & Needle is my recommendation if you’re looking for an affordable mattress. It has a lot of sought-after features baked into the basic model. It’s proven its durability and value by holding up for over five years of nightly use by two people.
