Late U.S. Senator Herb Kohl’s Jackson Hole Ranch Hits the Market for $65 Million
With sites like Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming’s gob-smacking natural settings evoke a calmness ideal for settling down. A brand-new home, dubbed Trader Ridge, came to market in the Equality State’s Jackson Hole valley for $23 million at the top of the month. But if you’re seeking more than its 11.5 acres of land, a nearby estate formerly owned by late Wisconsin senator Herb Kohl just pranced onto the market for $65 million with roughly 190 acres to explore.
Known as Red Hills Ranch, the sun-drenched property is surrounded by national forests and the Red Hills, which are part of the Gros Ventre mountain range. Kohl, who died at age 88 last year, bought the property in the 1970s as undeveloped land and went on to build a number of structures across the sprawling acreage, which is bordered by a river. The Milwaukee Bucks owner used the residence as a getaway for 40-plus years; it’s now on the market for the first time since 1975.

A main lodge, three riverfront cabins, and the owner’s residence are all factored into the sprawling compound, as are the swimming pool and a bunkhouse created for staff. Kohl also bred American paint horses at the site, according to Latham Jenkins of Live Water Properties, who holds the listing. Irrigation pastures and a tack barn on the premises allow the new owner to care for a herd of their own, just 25 miles away from downtown Jackson.

Each of the accommodations mirrors the estate’s rustic settings. In images, vaulted wooden ceilings tower over cozy living areas set next to stone fireplaces. Glass doors open onto a balcony overlooking the dramatic landscape. The tile-floored kitchen stands nearby with breakfast bar seating and a dining area. Elsewhere, the primary bedroom doubles as a lumberjack’s dream, featuring a stone fireplace and log cabin-style exposed wood walls.
The ranch, near the rural community of Kelly, was designed to blend in with its unspoiled setting. Sitting in the main living area of the lodge, this becomes clear as you peer out at the mountains through a large picture window. Aspen trees surrounding the abode also provide a sense of privacy. Nearby, residents and guests can try their hands at all manner of outdoor activities, including fly-fishing, rafting, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
