From a deliciously oozy brie, to a tangy cheddar or a punchy gorgonzola, there are plenty of dreamy cheeses to choose from if we were asked to name our top picks.

But turns out the UK's favourite cheese is none of the above.

Instead Britons named the processed cheese used in burgers and sandwiches as our top cheesy taste.

Far from being cheese snobs, a survey of 2,000 people by UK takeaway app Foodhub, ahead of National Burger Day (Thursday 26 August), has revealed we turn our noses up at a classic camembert.

Instead 40% of people named sliced processed cheese, commonly referred to as "plastic cheese", as one of their top three cheeses.

Second place went to cheddar, with 33% choosing it in their top three, and mozzarella and Red Leicester were close behind, snatching 20% and 19% of the vote respectively.

While stinky cheese isn't for everyone, stilton still managed a respectable seventh place, with 15% of foodies naming it within their favourite cheeses.

Meanwhile, parmesan took 14% of the vote, which enabled it to scrape into eighth place.

Fifth place went to halloumi, followed by brie, stilton, parmesan, feta and double Gloucester.

Smoked cheese fans will no doubt be miffed it didn't make it into the top 10, and neither did the sometimes sweet, sometimes savoury cream cheese.

Goat's cheese also narrowly missed out on a spot in the top ten, with 18% of people rating it last. Instead the stinkiest cheese of all, blue cheese, took the title of least popular, clocking up 23% of the vote.

While many may assume the French are the experts when it comes to cheese-making, it seems many of us like our cheese to be made closer to home.

When asked which country makes the best cheese, Britain came out on top with 56% of votes, beating second-place France with 30% of the vote.

Commenting on the somewhat surprising findings, Ardian Mula, a Foodhub spokesperson, said: “We already know that Britain loves its cheese. However, we’re surprised at how well received the processed cheese slice has been.

“A lot of people turn their nose up at this product but, our research clearly shows it is the nation’s favourite.

“Clearly much of this comes from the fact we love it on burgers and sandwiches”.
