In our fast-paced world, our homes should be our sanctuaries—places where we can truly be ourselves and find peace amid chaos. But creating a space that feels authentically you? That can be a challenge. Good news, though: Astrology can offer us a cosmic roadmap to crafting our perfect living space. Our astrological placements reveal a lot about us, including the environments in which we feel most at ease. As such, astrology and interior design are inherently intertwined.

“Design is about telling a story—bringing elements together to create visual harmony. As humans, we take a space, no matter how empty, and we inject our life into it,” interior designer and astrologist Anthony Perrotta tells ELLE DECOR. “Astrology is also a form of storytelling. Looking at places and points in your chart, you can see what you need from your home and to feel safe.”

Below, we’ve broken down the best interior design style for each sign—and how to figure it out. Depending on your chart, you may wish to incorporate more than one style!

First, Find Your Chart

By tapping into the wisdom of the stars, we can create living spaces that act as extensions of ourselves. But first things first: You need your astrological chart. If you don’t know yours, Perrotta suggests astro-charts.com. You’ll need your birth date, time, and location for this—so you may want to give your mom a quick call.

In addition to looking at your sun sign, Perrotta suggests paying attention to your Venus and moon signs as well. Our Venus sign tends to influence our taste, desires, resources, and what we value, while our moon sign is a place of safety, security, and comfort.

Next, Identify Your Sign’s Element

Now that you have your chart, what do you do with it? Perotta suggests using the elements (fire, earth, air, water) as a starting point. Are you a fire sign that thrives in energetic, vibrant spaces? Or perhaps an earth sign that finds solace in natural materials and muted tones? He emphasizes that the elements correlate to different aspects of our innate humanness: Fire is our heart, air is our mind, earth is our body, and water is our soul.

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

-Warm tones and bright hues

-Energetic accents

-Considered lighting (windows, candles, lamps)

“If looking to play up the fire energy in a chart, make sure to do so with caution,” Perrotta warns. “Fire burns.”

Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

-Soft colors and cool neutrals

-Metal accents

-Pay attention to air circulation (open your windows, turn on a fan)

“Air is heady, mentally driven, sharp,” Perotta tells us.

Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

-Muted, warm neutrals

-Terracotta and plant accents

-Earth tones

“When using earth energy in a space, make sure it is there to grow. We have to tend to earth energy. If we do, it brings us abundance in all areas of life,” Perrotta says.

Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

-Cool, jewel tones

-Reflective accents (mirrors)

-Water features (crystals, oceanic art, blue textiles)

“Just be careful of drowning in water. You don’t want to feel like you are swimming with no direction or aimless,” Perrotta tells us. “Water can nourish if done right.”

“I would suggest the easiest way to work with the elements is through color first, then through texture and accents—possibly even injecting actual manifestations of that element into your space,” Perotta tells us.

He advises looking at your chart’s elemental distribution, starting with your sun, moon, and rising signs, to determine which elements to emphasize in your space. You can choose to amplify your already-existing elements, or perhaps you would like to amplify what you lack. By incorporating these elemental aspects, you can begin to create a living environment that resonates with your chart and supports your well-being.
