I Tried the "Rolling Blitz" Trick and Got So Much Done in 15 Minutes

Resetting your home at the end of the day is essential for staying organized. Without it, dishes pile up, clutter accumulates, and a small tidying job can turn into a big one pretty quickly. I know this firsthand, unfortunately. It’s so easy to let things pile up, which is why I was so grateful to learn a quick and easy tidying hack that only takes about 15 minutes.

I was recently chatting with Rosa Picosa, an official cleaning spokesperson for Fabuloso, on cleaning up potential messes from a game-day party. She mentioned a hack called the “rolling blitz,” which is taking a trash can on wheels and rolling it through your space, tossing trash as you go.

While I thought this hack was super smart, I myself don’t have a trash can with wheels (much less the space for one in my small townhome). The solution? Using a laundry basket instead. “A laundry basket works just as well for gathering misplaced items and tidying up,” she shared. “It’s especially handy for resetting your living room in no time.” I knew I had to try it.

How I Tried the “Rolling Blitz” Cleanup Hack

My upstairs stair railing unfortunately turns into a dumping ground for miscellaneous items, all throughout the week. It’s right off of our second bedroom, which acts as my home office. It’s a prime spot to place empty coffee mugs, candles that have been burned through, or anything else that needs to take a trip downstairs.

I hate to admit that the pile sometimes grows especially large by the end of the week, so the railing is completely covered. The problem with tidying it is it requires multiple trips upstairs and down, as I can’t carry everything at once. This is a recipe for procrastination. (I know all of this could be solved just by putting my things away immediately, but that’s for another story.) This became the perfect opportunity to put the “rolling blitz” hack to the test.

Picosa recommended a laundry basket, but I used a smaller storage basket instead. Tidying up the stairwell appeared daunting at first, but the basket made it as simple as loading everything up. I started with dishes and put the bowls and mugs in first. They were going to the kitchen downstairs, so the basket came in clutch.

I then tossed a few pieces of trash into an upstairs trash bin and put a few miscellaneous items away upstairs — like the glass cleaner and wipe I had used on a nearby window. Lastly, I had two candles on the stairwell that were burned through. I tossed those in the basket as well to put in the freezer to get the remaining wax out. (I love reusing candle containers!)

Once the railing was clear, I went downstairs with the basket and put the dishes in the dishwasher and the candles in the freezer. I went back upstairs to dust and wipe the railing, and the job was done in about 15 minutes. Success!

The simplicity of this hack is really what makes it. Why didn’t I think of using a basket to quickly tidy my space? As Picosa said, this would be ideal for living room refreshes or even a bedroom cleanup. This hack was originally shared as a hosting tip as well, so feel free to walk around with your basket post-party to gather any lingering dishes, cups, or trash. Set a timer for 15 minutes and see how much you can get done. You’re sure to have a clear space in no time!
