I Tried the Larry David Sandwich From ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’—Here’s My Honest Opinion
I had to see what all the fuss was about.
Whitefish salad and smoked sable aren’t foods I typically use to make sandwiches. In fact, they’re foods I never use for anything. But when I was asked to make and also try the “Larry David Sandwich” from the show "Curb Your Enthusiasm," I knew I would have to be “open” to eating a sandwich with not one, but two types of smoked fish. So I piled it high on a bagel to find out if it’s truly worth eating, and here’s what I thought.
Team Ted vs. Team David
In Season 5, Episode 1 of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," Larry David tells Ted Danson about “the David,” his new sandwich at Leo’s Deli. He’s excited to get his own sandwich (especially since Danson already has one), but doesn’t love what’s inside, so he kindly asks Danson if they can swap. At first, Danson says, “Yes,” but then once he hears what’s in it (smoked fish, capers, onion, and cream cheese), he changes his mind, saying “That sounds awful.”
David tries to convince Danson that it's good, but Danson won’t budge, saying the “Ted” is a classic: turkey and Swiss on rye topped with coleslaw and Russian Dressing (which sounds like a lot like a turkey Rachel). Then he seals the deal—because David keeps asking why he won’t switch—with this line, “One tastes good and one sucks.”
I think we know which sandwich is which and admittedly, I have to agree, I’m on #TeamTed versus #TeamDavid when it comes to those two sandwich choices. But to really judge, I set out to make "the David" for myself.
How To Make the Larry David Sandwich From 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'
Here's what I gathered:
1 bagel (plain, everything, sesame, etc), split
1 tablespoon plain cream cheese
1 to 2 teaspoons capers, rinsed
1/4 cup prepared whitefish salad
3 to 4 slices smoked sable
3 thin slices white or red onion
It starts with a bagel and I suggest heading to your local bagel shop instead of grabbing a bag at the grocery store (or make your own!). A chewy, fresh bagel is always a choice you won’t regret. The flavor is your choice, but I recommend a sesame or plain bagel to keep things true to the OG. Split the bagel then toast it (or don’t, again, it’s up to you).
Top the prepared bagel with a tablespoon of cream cheese followed by a teaspoon or two of capers. Cover with the prepared whitefish salad, a few slices of smoked sable, and a couple of thin slices of white or red onion. Then cover it with the other bagel half and you’re ready to enjoy (or not).
My Honest Review of the Larry David Sandwich
I like smoked fish, so the combination of whitefish salad and smoked sable didn’t bother me. I also happen to really like bagels and cream cheese—also a “win” for the sandwich. After piling on the ingredients, I took a bite...I didn’t mind it. I enjoyed the smoky flavor and the saltiness from both the whitefish and the sable. I liked the tangy creaminess of the cream cheese and I loved the briny brightness of the capers.
While it all tasted fine and good, it didn’t feel like a classic or favorite to me. In fact, after a few bites, I was bored and wished I’d saved the other half of my bagel for something else.
My suggestion for improving the Larry David sandwich is to go light on the whitefish salad and sable, and add a little lettuce, tomato, and even cucumber to freshen things up a bit. And don’t forget the pickle!
Bottom line, give it a try if you like smoked fish. If you like it, let Larry David know, he’s probably still looking for someone to swap sandwiches with.
