I tried eve sleep’s ‘wunderflip’ mattress with adjustable firmness – this is what I thought
A mattress in a box is ultra convenient, but it’s also a risk. Not being able to try out a mattress before you buy it can cause some serious buyer’s remorse, especially if you’re unsure whether you want something firm or soft. While most retailers have return options or trial periods, it is, ultimately, a faff if you get it wrong.
That's why we were intrigued by eve’s new ‘wunderflip’ – an option that combines both a soft and firm mattress in one, giving you the option to choose the side you prefer and swap it over whenever you want. But can one mattress really do it all?
eve wunderflip mattress review
The wunderflip range includes six different mattresses on a spectrum of budgets, including both hybrid and memory foam options. I’ve got on well with hybrid mattresses in the past (a clever combination of both springs and memory foam layers), so opted for eve’s mid-range budget (£599) wunderflip hybrid; it also meant I could directly compare it to my previous, market-leading hybrid mattress.
The mattress was delivered rolled up but, notably, not in a box – it's a mattress in a box without the cardboard packaging. It sprung open when unraveled; I’d recommend removing the protective wrap straight away so that the mattress can air out before you sleep on it. There is a slight chemical smell (as with any off gassing), but it dissipated quickly, and the mattress didn’t take long at all to expand.
I received delivery reminders via text message, and it arrived when I was told it would. Two drivers bought the mattress inside and put it where I asked them to (note it is very heavy, so you’ll probably want to be a little better prepared than I was and remove your old mattress first).
Firm vs soft
I chose the softer side of the mattress (to begin with – more on that later) which has immediate sink-in comfort that other mattresses in a box don’t tend to have, so I was impressed from the off.
It comes with a quilted fabric cover which can be unzipped and clipped on to whichever side of the mattress you prefer. It’s noticeably soft to the touch, certified by Allergy UK and made from natural materials – but better still, a mattress protector isn’t essential (though probably sensible); I went without for the purpose of testing firmness and temperature.
The depth of the mattress is impressive for a boxed option, which sometimes have a flimsy finish. The wunderflip is around double the depth of the hybrid mattress in a box I was using before it, giving it more of the look of a store-bought mattress – and for £120 less (double).
Whether you opt for a firmer or softer finish, each option is sandwiched between layers of pressure-relieving memory foam and a combination of different sized pocket springs for adaptable support, breathability and temperature control. Fabric labels let you know which side of the mattress is which and there are two handles on each side for easy flipping.
And speaking of flipping – after a month of trying out the soft side, I opted for a sturdier snooze with the firmer side of the mattress; interestingly, the (albeit cloud-like, plush) softness made my husband’s snoring worse, so that’s worth bearing in mind if you’ve got (or are) a snorer!
The firmer side gave the comfort of the soft option with some important additional support. Neither side is an extreme of anything – if you want an ultra soft or firm pick, you’ll likely want to choose something more definitive (like the Emma NextGen mattress, for example, which is great for those who like a firmer feel) as opposed to something that tries to do both.
Those who don’t want a mattress you’ll sink into (which also isn’t great for snorers, as I’ve discovered) may find the soft side a little too spongy. If you know you want something soft, opt for the GHI-approved HiGRID premium hybrid. If you’re a middle-of-the-road person, though – like me – eve's wunderflip is a great option at a great price.
eve wunderflip hybrid mattress: the verdict
I’ve been impressed with eve’s wunderflip mattress, which offers all the benefits of other market-leading hybrids at a fraction of the cost – plus, of course, its flippable firmness.
I appreciated the choice of firm vs soft and, given the opportunity, did flip for a different firmness around a month into use.
I have, however, found it to be comfortable on both sides, it just so happens I married a snorer (undoubtedly I won’t be alone in this) so it’s important to note that I did sleep well on both sides of the mattress, but we’ll be sticking with the firmer feel for now.
