I Tried ALDI's $47 Thanksgiving Dinner for 10—These Were My Favorite Parts
It takes all the stress out of planning and shopping for the big day.
ALDI recently announced that they’re rolling back prices so much that you can make a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people for less than $50.
Since they made their announcement, I decided to make the entire meal out of journalistic interest and have my family try it.
What You Get for $47
The meal includes a turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, rolls, mac and cheese, gravy mix, and the ingredients to make mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie.
After one long day of cooking on a random weeknight in October, my husband and teenage son were very, very happy with me, and this Thanksgiving, I will definitely be making a few of these dishes again. The ingredients in this bundle are well worth the $47. Here are my favorites in the pack.
My Favorite Parts of ALDI's $47 Thanksgiving Dinner Bundle
The biggest winner was the turkey. You can never go wrong with a Butterball turkey that costs less than $20—it’s turkey-licious. My son asked me if I would make turkey more often. I promised him that in a non-holiday season, I would cook him a Butterball turkey breast (which you can also get at ALDI) since it is a lot easier.
One secret ingredient that helped make the turkey and the stuffing (more on that later) taste SO good was Stonemill Poultry Seasoning, a spice blend that costs only $1.19 if you buy it outside the bundle. The seasoning mix brings together herbs, black pepper, and nutmeg. I mixed a tablespoon with butter, salt, and pepper and rubbed it all over my turkey, including under the skin. I also added it to the gravy and the stuffing.
My next favorite ingredients were the fresh sweet potatoes, potatoes, celery, and onions. ALDI’s fresh veggies always win, in my book, and I would say of these veggies, my family love, love, loved the sweet potatoes. At less than $1 per pound (91 cents, to be exact), they are amazing.
I roasted them for a little over an hour before peeling and mashing them with salt, butter, and a touch of vanilla extract. They were so good that way that I didn’t think they needed the marshmallows on top, but I added them because they were part of the bundle.
My son told me I had to include the rolls as one of my favorite items in the bundle. I’m personally more of a crescent roll gal (which ALDI also sells), but included in the bundle are L’Oven Fresh Hawaiian Sweet Rolls ($2.99). My son and husband adore them, so I buy them year-round.
That also means I don’t automatically think of them in the context of Thanksgiving, but I can see why they're included in the bundle. They’re pillowy soft with just the right amount of sweetness. I advise you to buy an extra package or two so you can have mini turkey sandwiches the day after Thanksgiving.
Last, I made a pumpkin pie from scratch using the Baker’s Corner pumpkin purée ($1.15), a can of Baker’s Corner evaporated milk ($1.05), and Bakehouse Pie Crust ($1.99). The pie, made with a touch of bourbon (not from ALDI), was so good that my husband ate a piece for breakfast the next day.
All in all, the $47 Thanksgiving bundle is well worth the price. It saves you from having to make a grocery list or plan the meal, so you can be sure you'll have everything you need when the day comes.
