With spring beckoning, we're excited to be refreshing our capsule wardrobe with milder days in mind, and one chic trouser trend in particular has caught our eye: pinstripe trousers.

There's just something innately polished about this transeasonal style that makes looking smart and stylish so easy, and we love the idea of modernising such an established workwear classic with cool colour-pop trainers, sharp blazers and baseball caps.

Back in January our shopping editor picked out 'elevated everyday' as one of her spring/summer fashion trends to watch out for, noting that many runway shows from the likes of Loewe, Valentino and Prada subtly championed those humble hero pieces that you reach for on the regular.

If fashion Instagram is anything to go by, then pinstripe trousers are one such staple that you need to add to your arsenal now, with influencers everywhere making them their new season stars.

Celebrities love them too; Dakota Johnson is the pinstripe trousers poster girl right now, setting fashion WhatsApp chats everywhere ablaze after stepping out in New York in a charcoal pinstripe suit with black kitten heels earlier this month. The Princess of Wales is another fan, opting for a navy pinstripe suit with gold buttons for an engagement in Cardiff last October.

Traditionally linked to corporate men in suits (hence BOSS models carrying briefcases down the SS24 catwalk), the 'borrowed from the boys' look of pinstripe gives it an edge that's perfect for office styling.

But while shirting and a matching blazer and/or waistcoat are its natural power dressing partners, a slick pair of pinstripe trousers also looks striking teamed with delicate pastel knitwear, layered over a top featuring feminine details like lace, ruffles or pretty buttons. For spring, try a lighter knitted vest over a floaty white blouse, adding an on-trend girlish bow to your hair to give your outfit a softer finish.

But which silhouette to go for? We're eyeing up some wide-leg pinstripe trousers, of which there are plenty on the high street, but you'll also find them in slimmer cuts that look especially elegant paired with the also trending pointed-toe shoes.

Tempted to jump on the pinstripe trousers train? We're adding at least one pair to basket, seeing this not so much as a fun trend buy as a savvy investment that won't date and will be brought out year after year.
