TREES Inc. giving another $10K to Terre Haute

Apr. 19—As part of its 1,000 Trees for Terre Haute Storm Response Plan, TREES Inc. is giving the city of Terre Haute $10,000 to plant 100 trees.

Last year, TREES Inc. planted more than 215 trees at Spencer Ball Park, Collett Park and elsewhere in the city. It will plant another 100 trees on South 9th Street from Sarah Scott Middle School to Putnam Street on April 27.

This will be the second $10,000 grant given to the city by TREES Inc. Members of the group were inspired to begin the 1,000 Trees initiative after heavy storms in late June and early July of last year toppled or damaged many area trees.

"Once the storm passed, we knew we couldn't sit on the 'tree row'; we had to take action," TREES Inc. President Ann Ryan said. "This is a big goal for a small, all-volunteer organization, but stepping up to care for our trees is what this group has done for more than 30 years."

The group will present Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun the $10,000 check Monday at 11:15 a.m. at Spencer Ball Park on 8th Avenue. The money will be used to plant 100 trees on 8th Avenue from 24th Street to Brown Avenue. The previous gift went to plant 100 trees on S. 11th Street and S. 16th Street.
