A tree is for life, not just for Christmas
Re your article on Christmas trees (Imported Christmas trees cost more thanks to post-Brexit checks, 1 November), it’s time for a new slogan perhaps. How about “A Christmas tree’s for life, not just for Christmas”? Complete with instructions on how to grow, then pot and water for 12 days inside, then replant in the garden, ready for next year.

• Your article on the sophisticated burglars targeting footballers (‘The lower your profile the better’: social media’s role in rise of high-profile UK burglaries, 9 November) quotes a former Metropolitan police chief as saying that “the lower the profile that you can keep while obviously doing what you professionally do, the better”. Good advice if you are a professional burglar.

• Never mind spicing up weather forecasts (Letters, 8 November), I’d be grateful if forecasters would stop using folksy phrases like “mist and murk”, “spits and spots”, “dribs and drabs”. Worst of all is using active verbs for inanimate objects, as in “temperatures will struggle”.

• The cost of a “bat shed” near the HS2 line has risen to more than £100m (7 November). Never has the phrase “batshit crazy” seemed more apt.

• Haven’t we had enough? On Monday, Donald Trump was in Trivia corner (G2), although that’s probably where he belongs.
