Top-flight footballer dead aged just 22 after car crash
Footballer Marco Angulo has tragically passed away at the age of 22, following a car crash. The young star was involved in a horrific collision in Quito, Ecuador's capital, in the early hours of October 7. The talented midfielder, who had represented the Ecuador national team three times and top-flight club LDU Quito, was immediately rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery to alleviate pressure in his head caused by the accident.
He also suffered a lung contusion which necessitated a chest tube, although no active bleeding was found. Over the past 35 days, messages of love and support have poured in for Marco, but sadly it was announced this morning that he had lost his battle with his injuries. Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a defender for Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Cuniburo Futbol Club star Diogo Nazareno, also tragically lost their lives in the crash.
It's believed that the Ford Explorer carrying Marco hit a metal structure on the Ruminahui highway in southeast Quito around 4:30am.

LDU Quito released a heartfelt statement this morning, saying: "With deep pain and sadness, we regret to report the death of our beloved player Marco Angulo. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. Rest in peace."
Ezequiel Piovi, LDU Quito's captain, paid tribute to his teammate on Instagram, writing: "May you rest in peace." Marco had been relishing a loan spell with Ecuadorian team LDU Quito after a loan transfer from MLS squad FC Cincinnati earlier this year.
The ex-Independiente Juniors ace clocked up 16 appearances in all tournaments for LDU Quito, the latest of which was against Orense in Ecuador's premier league on October 6 the day prior to the crash.
After being selected for Ecuador's senior team for the first time in November 2022, Marco made his international debut in a nil-nil draw with Iraq. He earned his third and last cap as a second-half substitute in Ecuador's 3-1 victory over Bolivia back in June.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation also paid tribute to Marco. "The Ecuadorian Football Federation expresses its deepest regret for the death of: Marco Angulo former La Tri player, who with his talent and dedication defended the colours of our country at every opportunity he had.
"Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts, especially in all of us who shared countless trips, training camps and matches with him. We join in solidarity with his family, teammates and loved ones, wishing them strength in this difficult time. Rest in peace, Angulito."
