Highly underrated and often the unsung hero of interior design, the versatility of rugs knows no bounds. This popular floor covering allows for creative expression through the pairing of different colours and patterns, all of which can enhance the character of a room and tie the space together. Rugs are brilliant styling devices for open-plan layouts too, cleverly helping to zone areas. Used on a hard floor, a rug adds warmth (especially useful in colder months) and texture to a space, as well as minimising marks and scratches. Thick pile rugs can even help with acoustics by absorbing sound and preventing echoes. Generally, rugs are pretty transformative: choose well and the dynamic and feel of a room totally changes – all without the need for a complete redesign.

One of the biggest rug trends for 2025 is around bespoke and custom designs. It allows for complete control over the design process, from colour and pattern to size and fabric, and ties in with the ongoing shift towards greater personalisation in the home; reflected through the rise in bespoke kitchens through to recent decorating trends like maximalism and nostalgiacore.

'The appeal of custom-made flooring lies not just in its uniqueness, but also in its exceptional craftmanship,' says Jon Flannigan, head of product at Crucial Trading, following the brand's newly-launched bespoke rug and runner service. 'Naturally, homeowners want their spaces to reflect their individuality and tastes, which can involve moving beyond pre-manufactured products in favour of bespoke options.'

So, what colours, shapes and patterns are emerging this year? Read on for the hottest rug trends that design experts predict will dominate 2025.

1. Bold colour – and lots of it

Statement-making vibrant hues are on the rise this year, says Jodie Hatton, design manager at heritage carpet company Brintons: '2025 sees a gentle shift towards introducing bold colours to interiors – from flashes of rich red, and intense jade green to calming coral. These shades are joined by electric cobalt and warming mustard yellow, creating floors that command attention. More than just a design choice, these bold colours reflect our collective desire for spaces that radiate personality and spark joy.'

Ashley Stark, creative director of Stark and founder of Ashley Stark Home, notes a particular trend with burgundy-coloured rugs. 'This rich, deep hue offers a sophisticated alternative to brighter reds, embodying a warmth that feels both bold and grounded,' says Ashley. 'It allows those who might shy away from louder colours to embrace a touch of vibrancy without overwhelming their space. It’s the perfect colour for a statement rug that complements a palette of neutrals while still evoking a sense of calm.'

2. Considered materials

The shift from fast furniture to timeless, investment pieces is a trend that Ashley sees contiuning. 'There’s a growing preference for artisanal, handcrafted rugs made from premium materials like wool, silk, and natural fibres, which offer both longevity and unique character,' she says.

Johanna Constantinou, trends expert at Tapi Carpet & Floors, says the cottagecore aesthetic has in some way influenced the preference towards natural materials and neutral colours that evoke a rustic, farmhouse charm. 'Rugs made from wool, linen, and cotton are seeing increased popularity, as these materials have long been associated with the countryside. This style of rug creates a cosy and grounded atmosphere within your home and seamlessly fits into the growing trend of nature-infused living spaces,' Johanna explains.

3. Nature-inspired maximalism

Speaking of nature, Claire Pinckney, manager of design trend forecasting at Ruggable, says 2025 will give way to bold, dramatic, oversized botanical-print rugs: 'Nature-inspired maximalism calls forth lush botanical prints with fantastical, nature-inspired motifs. The more dramatic, the better. This trend creates an immersive environment that centres the beauty of the natural world through mossy greens, marbled blues, and patterns on patterns.'

To create the ultimate jungle look, pile on the indoor plants, style with wooden furniture, and opt for natural fibres to bring the feeling of being outdoors indoors.

'Living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms are excellent spaces to try this trend,' Claire continues. 'The lush greenery and bold patterns energise living spaces, add a cosy and luxurious element to bedrooms, and make bathrooms feel more spa-like and serene.'

4. Circular definitely rules

Leaning into the trend for curves, arches and rounded forms, circular rugs will be the rug shape of choice this year.

'Rug styles in 2025 are shifting to embrace softer, more organic shapes, complementing the rise of rounded furniture in interiors,' says Johanna. 'Moving away from the sharp, angular lines of previous seasons, we’re seeing curved sofas, chairs, and tables that infuse a sense of fluidity and warmth into spaces. To enhance this new softness, plush, textured rugs or circular rugs are making waves, creating a more inviting and harmonious atmosphere.'

5. Colour-blocked minimalism

The use of primary colours, grids, and futuristic shapes are being used to create a balanced yet vibrant aesthetic in rug design. The key here is to introduce colour minimally and gradually, but doing so in a vibrant, punchy hue emits a playful energy. 'Making one bold choice when it comes to colour can add so much character to your home. A little goes a long way,' notes Claire.

6. Graphic expression

2025 marks a defining shift in rug design, with graphic patterns emerging triumphant over distressed styles, says Jodie. 'Look for precisely executed geometric shapes, linear designs, and stylised florals that bring a playful edge to any space,' she says. The trend also pairs well with the art of pattern mixing. 'Pair your graphic rug with complementary designs for a curated, collected-over-time aesthetic that exudes personality,' Jodie adds.

7. Tactile luxury

The sensory experience of the home matters more than ever and contributes to overall wellbeing. In the world of rugs, high-pile designs – those that offer incredible texture and exceptional comfort underfoot – are trending for 2025.

'Premium wool rugs lead this tactile revolution, offering an irresistible combination of plush comfort and enduring quality,' explains Jodie. 'High-pile designs create an almost cloud-like sensation underfoot, transforming everyday spaces into luxurious retreats.'

Jodie says these plush surfaces are particularly transformative in living spaces and bedrooms, where comfort is paramount: 'Their natural insulating properties and sound-dampening abilities add functional benefits to their undeniable aesthetic appeal, making them a smart investment in your home's future.'
