This Tool-Free IKEA Hack Is the Best Small Space Idea I’ve Ever Seen

There are small spaces, and then there are small spaces without closets — if you know, you know. You can only do so much to add more clothing storage, and bulky pieces like freestanding wardrobes or floor racks dominate precious square footage. It’s a lose-lose no matter what. Luckily, though, if you’ve had to resort to keeping clothes out in the open on a rack, there’s a simple IKEA hack that can conceal them in style.

New York-based content creator Nick Lowry recently explained in an Instagram video that he and his partner had been using a few open wardrobes in a corner of their bedroom but wanted a change. “While they’re great for displaying pieces we love and wear often, they can get dusty and actually look pretty messy,” he said in a voiceover. For a renter-friendly solution, he decided to build a drill-free curtain wall in front of the storage setup.

To start, he bought two of IKEA’s VIDGA curtain track rails, one of which he cut slightly shorter to fit the space accordingly, and installed them using Command Strips. As for curtains, he wanted something textured and opted for pleated TwoPages panels from Amazon. Lowry actually ordered a few different options, hanging up both a white linen and brown velvet style side by side to see which one they preferred — and the two-tone setup even works well as is.

“We’re actually doing half/half, which I don’t mind the look of,” Lowry explained in the post. “It gives a very cozy vibe while keeping everything dust-free and adds a nice bit of texture to our space.” Not only that, but the curtains still keep clothes and shoes easily accessible, while ultimately making the room look less cluttered and way more sophisticated.

The only caveat to this project is that you do need some sort of wall bump-out or recess to mount the VIDGA and curtains on, like a nook similar to Lowry’s or a doorless closet space. But from there, this small-space-friendly storage DIY easily comes together with just three materials. You can also likely find cheaper curtains, even from IKEA, for as low as $20 (Lowry’s cost between $117 to $159 per panel). Just make sure they’re long enough to barely skim the ground, and that’s it — no more racks of clothes cramping your bedroom style!
