Tom Kerridge disclosed to the audience at GH Live 2024 that he's a huge fan of the air fryer, but is yet to conquer baking a cake in the famous kitchen gadget.

Chatting to the Good Housekeeping Institute's Head of Testing, Angela Trofymova, the beloved British chef and restaurant owner discussed using kitchen gadgets at home.

The star said in the conversation: "I have got an air fryer - I'm a big fan of it, but I don't how to cook in it. I don't know how to make a cake; I haven't done any of that. We use it in our house for quick teas and baking those frozen bread rolls. I kind of use it like a microwave, but for crispiness."

The chef, who revealed he has developed over 5,000 recipes during his distinguished career, also discussed the other kitchen essentials he can't cook without.

"The basic kitchen gadget needed for cooking is a good chopping board, a sharp knife (that you know how to keep sharp), a good food mixer and a nice blender."

Recently launching his Gastropub range at Marks & Spencer, Tom also owns three Michelin stars across his restaurants and holds two Michelin stars for his flagship inn The Hand and Flowers in Marlow, plus one Michelin star for its relaxed little sibling The Coach.

During the discussion, Tom shared that he believed the key to success in the hospitality industry, is an incredible team, and likens them to 'pirate ships.'

"Have you ever been a professional kitchen? And got out alive. [I call them] Pirates because hospitality is the most incredible thing… Cooking is a world of excitement, chaos and fun…It’s like a pirate ship. It’s a load of people who have found their way there, slowly sailing the waters of what is in front of them, and taking over the world.”

Claiming in the interview that he loves seeing others succeed in the hospitality industry, he said: "I’m not really star-struck by anyone. I absolutely adore success, and anyone who has taken opportunities and worked incredibly hard and fought adversity to get to where they are, and not had it handed to them."

However, one celebrity he is particularly taken by was Lewis Hamilton. Tom said: "I’m a big motorsport fan. He comes from a single parent background, comes from Stevenage and in a posh boy sport, where money gets you everywhere. To come from nothing, through his raw talent, determination and hard work, skills and support from his parents (even though they’re split), to becoming a seven-time world champion.”

It therefore comes no surprise that his most-used phone app was BBC Sport!
