Tom Ford is stepping down from his namesake label
Tom Ford is stepping down from his eponymous fashion brand, the designer announced quietly on Instagram last night. After 18 years at the helm of his namesake label – and following decades in the industry, having revolutionised Gucci in the Nineties and taken on Yves Saint Laurent – he is leaving his label, and perhaps stepping back from fashion altogether.
"Tom Ford, in his final collection for his eponymous brand, has turned to his archives and reissued his favourite looks from the past 13 years," the brand announced alongside a series of images and videos, which were shot by Steven Meisel. The collection features some of his most memorable pieces, which are modelled by the likes of Amber Valetta, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss, all of whom have played a big role in his shows over the years.
The brand is yet to make any further statement on the news, and it is not clear who exactly will take on the role of creative director in the absence of Ford, although the label's head of menswear, Peter Hawkings is rumoured to be the man for the job, according to a report from The New York Times.
What is also not clear is whether Ford is bowing out of fashion altogether, or whether he will be taking on a new opportunity.
Ford has of course had much success within fashion, but he has also directed two successful and critically-acclaimed films, so he could be heading back into Hollywood, he may be choosing to retire altogether or, we might see him on a runway again soon.
One thing is for sure though, as one of the biggest names, Ford's absence would be felt enormously if he were to step away from the industry for good.
