No one likes cleaning the toilet, but regularly reaching for the toilet brush — and a powerful bleach — is an essential household chore.

Choosing the right brush may not sound particularly glamorous, but it’s just as important as any other cleaning appliance, helping to keep this unhygienic corner clean and fresh.

When browsing for a new brush, I looked to OXO, a brand famous for its innovative household products. Its toilet brush, part of the retailer’s easy-to-use Good Grips range, has angled bristles for hard-to-reach areas and a drip tray to help prevent bad odours.

The Good Housekeeping home and garden team has been impressed by OXO’s Good Grips range before (see our Tub and Tile scrubber review), so I was keen to see how its toilet brush fared in my bathroom.

OXO Good Grips Toilet Brush: My honest review

I paired the brush with Delphis’ eco toilet cleaner, my go-to cleaning product, and didn’t clean the toilet for just over a week to really test its abilities.

When cleaning the bowl, the brush’s stiff bristles effectively picked up any mess, but also didn’t flick any water around — a common hazard when cleaning the toilet! The rounded handle made the brush easy to hold, and it was long enough that my hands avoided contact with the bowl.

The angled brush reached the underside of the toilet bowl with ease. After three swipes I felt confident with the results; the brush got deep in the crevices and I couldn’t see any leftover grime. All in all, it took me less than five minutes to clean the bowl and underside.

The drip tray was undoubtedly my favourite feature. Rather than the toilet brush sitting in dirty water, the holder’s tiny ventilation holes allowed the bristles to air dry; a clever way to prevent bad odours and germs festering at the bottom of the holder, and it felt a lot more hygienic.

OXO’s sleek holder also conceals the brush when not in use, so only the handle and holder are visible, which automatically opens when you pull up the brush. This handy function, along with the brush’s long handle, meant I avoided bending down low to manually replace it. Plus, the holder is sturdy enough that there’s no fear of it tipping over.

OXO also offers replacement brush heads, so you don’t have to re-buy a whole new toilet brush when yours is looking a little worse-for-wear.

One note: when I first used the brush, the head became unscrewed and fell into the toilet bowl. It was easily screwed back on and tightened once I’d fished it out, but I’d recommend double checking it’s secure before you start cleaning.

OXO Good Grips Toilet Brush: My verdict

I’m suitably convinced by this nifty brush. It left my toilet bowl sparkling in less than five minutes, with its angled brush getting into all the nooks and crannies that aren’t always visible.

The ventilation tray is by far my favourite feature, helping to prevent smelly odours and built-up bacteria in the long-run — although I’d still recommend rinsing the brush with clean water on a regular basis.
