While a staple in menswear, women’s suede jackets are often overlooked in favour of slick leather. The past half decade has seen clean silhouettes and 'newness' reigning supreme, and as a result we're less forgiving of fabrics that fade, change and develop a patina – something suede is celebrated for usually.

Then along came last season’s shows and suddenly suede looked versatile. It came in candy-coloured hues (pea-green and pillarbox red) at Prada, logo-embossed at Gucci, intricately embellished at Miu Miu and blousoned at Chloé. Suede dominated outside of the shows too: we spotted co-ords, mini skirts, accessories and bombers made of this plush fabric.

But, if you want to shop mindfully, it pays to ignore trends when you’re investing in a forever jacket. Sure, you can tap into an era or aesthetic (clean-cut and collared à la Prada, boho à la Chloé, or even western-inspired), but it’s important that your investment goes the distance. Suede jackets are just as trans-seasonal as a trench, so the right choice can uniform you all year round with appropriate layering.

How to care for suede jackets:

Suede is high-maintenance due to its porosity, but this is also what makes it a fabric that ages so beautifully. If you want to protect your investment, treat your jacket with a waterproof solution before you even think about leaving the house.

You must never saturate suede, but if you do need to spot clean: "Always be gentle," says Daisy Harvey, founder of the recently launched up-cyling app Loom. "Brush off dirt before using any kind of cloth, and always blot rather than rubbing, for fear of embedding the stain. For any tougher marks try a suede eraser." If disaster strikes, though, it’s best to leave the rescue mission to specialist dry cleaners.

Storage is important, too. Keep your jacket out of direct sunlight, and always use a hanger in the wardrobe so you can maintain its shape. We recommend giving your suede items a weekly spruce with a suede brush to keep the nap looking supple.
